CHARLESTON, S.C. - UNC Asheville scored seven runs in the final two innings to break open a close game as the Bulldogs recorded a 9-2 Big South Conference victory over Charleston Southern Friday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.
The win went to junior right-hander Ryan Dull (2-3) who pitched Asheville's first complete game of the year. He struck out a career-high 10 hitters, scattered five hits and walked just one.
Robert McIntosh led Asheville at the plate with three hits. Catlin Carter scored two runs. Senior Danny Baatz had a key two-run single for the Bulldogs in eighth inning.
The Bulldogs picked up their third straight Big South Conference victory to improve their overall record to 10-15 overall and 4-3 in Big South Conference play.
"We did a good job winning on the road today," commented Asheville head coach Tom Smith. "Ryan Dull was just sensational and kept a very hot Charleston Southern club at bay. We did a nice job executing at the plate in key situations."
In the eighth inning, Jordan Lurie led off with a walk. He went to second on McIntosh's single to center field. Patrick Koontz put down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out. After an intentional walk to Grant Gajdosz loaded the bases, Mike Vaughn lifted a sacrifice fly to right-field that scored Lurie with the go-ahead run and a 3-2 Bulldog lead. McIntosh scored on a wild pitch to pad the margin to 4-2.
With runners on second and third and two outs, Baatz gave Asheville some breathing room with a two-run single to right-field, putting the Bulldogs in front, 6-2.
Asheville sealed the victory in the ninth with three runs. Vaughn delivered a run-scoring double. Nick Collazo completed the scoring with a two-run single to push the margin to 9-2.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the third inning. McIntosh would score an unearned run when he raced home on a passed ball to give Asheville a 1-0 lead.
The Buccaneers would knot the game in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Alex Tomasovich at 1-1.
Asheville would go back in front in the fifth thanks to the speed of Catlin Carter. The senior shortstop walked, stole second and then went to third on a ground-out. He scored on McIntosh's ground-out for a 2-1 Bulldog lead.
CSU tied the game on a run-scoring double in the sixth from Walt Quattlebaum at 2-2.
The teams will play the second of their three-game series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
