ASHEVILLE, N.C.   – With the score tied at five runs apiece between ETSU and UNC Asheville the Buccaneers scored eight unanswered runs in the top of the eighth inning en route to a 13-5 victory over the Bulldogs in non-conference baseball action at Greenwood Field.

“I wasn't really pleased with our effort today, we've got to find a better way to do things all the way around,” said Asheville skipper Tom Smith. “Find a better way to do things defensively, on the mound and at the plate. If we're not prepared that's my fault.”

After winning their first four games of the season the Bulldogs have dropped four in a row to move to 4-4 on the year. Asheville was undefeated at home coming into today after sweeping Murray State at Greenwood to open the season.

ETSU improved to 5-2 with the win as Bo Reeder and Dylan Pratt collected three runs batted in apiece. Matthew Scruggs and Derek Trent each posted two RBI, while Paul Hoilman scored three runs for the Buccaneers.

Grier Harrington (1-1) was credited with the loss in relief for the Bulldogs after giving up four runs (two earned) on two hits in two thirds of an innings work. Middle reliever Scott McNally (3-0) picked up the win for ETSU allowing only one hit in one inning of work.

The Bucs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a Trent homer down the rightfield line off of Asheville starter Robert McIntosh. The Bulldogs answered with five runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth with Jordan Lurie, Grant Gajdosz, Ian Graham, Mike Vaughn and Cody Buch all earning RBI's in the frame.

ETSU tied the game in the seventh scoring on a balk by Tommy Houmard of Asheville, a double by Michael Gonzalez and a throwing error by Graham. Heading into the eighth the score was tied at 5-5.

In that eighth inning the Bucs exploded for eight runs, highlighted by home runs by Pratt and Reeder along with a two-run double by Scruggs. Asheville would be unable to answer in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings and would fall by the final of 13-5.

Asheville will be back in action this weekend as the Bulldogs hit the road for a three-game series with UNC Charlotte beginning on Friday afternoon. The trip to Charlotte is the beginning of a 14-game road trip for the Blue & White, who don't play again at home until hosting Big South Conference foe Coastal Carolina March 25-27 at Greenwood Field.
