Bulldogs Drop Series Opener To Charlotte, 3-2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team saw its current losing skid extended to five games on Friday afternoon as the Bulldogs dropped a 3-2 decision to Charlotte at Hayes Stadium in the first game of a three game series as the 49ers scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win.
Ryan Dull got the start for Asheville (4-5) and went seven complete innings, giving up two runs on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Matthew Pate came on in relief in the eighth inning and gave up the game-winning run to drop to 0-1 on the season.
Asheville out-hit the 49ers (8-2) 10-to-6 in the contest, but Charlotte made the plays down the stretch to keep the Bulldogs off the board. Ryan Mas picked up the win in relief for the 49ers in two and one-thirds innings of relief while Bryan Hamilton picked up the save.
Robert McIntosh continued his strong start to the season for the Blue & White going 2-for-3 at the plate with a runs scored while Mike Vaughn went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Charlotte took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Zach Passerelle double down the leftfield line that scored a runner. Passerelle reached third a batter later and then was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Justin Roland as the 49ers went up 2-0 heading into the sixth.
Asheville would tie the game in the top of the sixth on a Vaughn single down the rightfield line with two runners on base.
Heading into the bottom of the eighth with the score tied at two runs apiece the 49ers scored a run on a Corey Shaylor fielder's choice. Asheville would not be able to plate a runner in the top of the ninth as they would fall by the final of 3-2.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Hayes Stadium in a game set to begin at 2 p.m.
