49ers Edge Bulldogs, 6-5

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte hit two home runs and built a big lead and then held off a determined UNC Asheville comeback as the 49ers edged the Bulldogs, 6-5 in college baseball action Saturday afternoon.
Asheville (4-6) was led at the plate by Patrick Koontz who had two hits and an RBI. Mike Vaughn also had a double. Ian Graham added a run-scoring singles.
The 49ers scored four times in the second inning to grab a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs chipped away and closed to 6-5 in the seventh inning with two runs but could get no closer.
Grier Harrington pitched the final five innings for Asheville and pitched very well in relief of Drew Spear (0-2). He tossed five innings, allowing just two hits, one run, striking out three and walking just one.
Asheville will try to snap an early-season six-game losing streak on Sunday when the Bulldogs and 49ers play at Noon. Robert McIntosh is scheduled to be on the mound for the Blue & White.
