BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The UNC Asheville baseball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday afternoon against Campbell University, falling in game one 9-5 and then dropping game two 17-10 as the Camels complete a three-game sweep of the Bulldogs at Taylor Field.
Asheville (4-3) was off to its best start since the 1992-93 season winning four consecutive games to start the season before running into the Camels, who improve to 6-2 on the year. Drew Spear took the loss in game one while Elliot Criss was credited with the loss in game two.
In the two games centerfielder Danny Baatz went 4-for-9 at the plate with three runs scored for the Bulldogs with teammate Cody Buch finished 3-for-8 with four runs batted in and two runs scored.
Campbell's Josh Holskey tallied six RBI with fellow Camels Jimmy Brennemen, Blake Boyce and Kyle Holmstrom collecting three RBI apiece in the doubleheader sweep. Logan Self earned the game one victory with Ryan Mattes picking up the win in game two.
In the first game the Camels jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a Holskey sacrifice fly that drove in Brennemen from third. Asheville would score four runs in the top of the fourth highlighted by a two-run single by Buch. The Bulldogs' lead would be short-lived as the Camels posted five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.
The Blue & White would plate a runner in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to one only to see the Camels push the lead back to two in the bottom of the frame. Holskey hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to push Campbell's lead to four runs.
That would be all the Camels needed as they picked up the game one victory 9-5. Self earned the win for Campbell going five and one-thirds innings giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts and five walks. Spear went three and one-thirds innings allowing six runs on eight hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Game two saw the Bulldogs put up five runs in the top of the first highlighted by a Tommy Houmard three-run double. Once again the Camels would answer in a big way posting 10 runs on six hits in the bottom of the frame. The Bulldogs would score three runs over the next three innings but the Camels answered with seven runs over the same stretch.
Asheville scored a pair of runs in the eighth but could not match Campbell's fire power, falling by a final of 17-10. Mattes picked up the win for the Camels in relief giving up one run on three hits with four K's in six complete innings. Criss was credited with the loss for the Bulldogs giving up eight runs (five earned) on four hits in two-thirds of an inning's work.
