Saturday's Baseball Game Postponed; Doubleheader For Sunday

Bulldogs Drop Slugfest 14-13 to Liberty

ASHEVILLE, N.C.? Reed Kreiser went 4-for-5 with his ninth home run of the season and drove in four runs but the UNC Asheville bullpen could not hold a lead as Liberty came back for a 14-13 win in 10 innings Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

Asheville (13-20, 1-4 Big South) scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 11-5 lead. The Bulldogs sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. Kevin Mattison, Kevin Weidenbacher, and Kreiser each had RBI singles in the inning before Justin Schumer drew a bases loaded walk. Beau Zinman added a two-RBI double. Danny Baatz singled home a run and Catlin Carter's sacrifice fly finished out the inning. The Dogs had a seven-run inning on Friday, giving Asheville two-straight games with a big inning.

Weidenbacher went 3-for-6 in the game to extend his hit streak to 28-straight games tying the Big South record for most hits in consecutive games set in 1999 by Charleston Southern's Jeff Corrigale.

Liberty (13-15, 2-3 Big South) answered with four runs in the sixth inning highlighted by a two-RBI double by David Giammaresi, a sacrifice fly by Cody Brown and a RBI single by Garrett Young to make the score 11-9.

In the eighth the Flames loaded the bases when Young delivered a grand slam over the right-center field fence for his third home run of the season to put Liberty ahead 13-11. Young finished the game 3-for-5 with seven RBI.

Kreiser hit his ninth home run of the year to left field with Elliott Arrington on base in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 13 where it remained after nine innings.

In the tenth, Justin Schumer (0-4) hit Brown and Young to lead off the inning. A walk to Joe Feeley loaded the bases with one out. Tim Rotola hit a ground ball to shortstop but the Bulldogs could not turn the double play allowing the go ahead run to score.

Asheville pitchers walked six and hit three batters in the game. Of those nine batter put on base, six of them scored. Liberty pitchers walked three Bulldogs and hit three more. Of those six batters put on base only two of them scored for Asheville.

Ryan Page picked up the win to improve to 1-3 throwing the final two innings for Liberty.

The rubber game of the series will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The game can be heard on uncabulldogs.com beginning at 12:50 p.m.
