Schumer?s Slam Not Enough as Coastal Defeat Asheville 10-4

CONWAY, S.C.? Justin Schumer hit a grand slam in the eighth inning but that was all the runs UNC Asheville could manage in a 10-4 loss at Coastal Carolina on Saturday.

Schumer's sixth home run of the season made the scored 7-4. It was the first grand slam by a Bulldog hitter since Rob Vernon hit one at Western Carolina on March 14, 2007. The last four grand slam home runs hit by Asheville players have all been on the road.

Coastal Carolina (32-7, 9-2 Big South) scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning off Asheville (16-26, 2-9 Big South) starter Chris Brookey (3-1). Tommy Baldridge highlighted the inning with a three-run home run which was sixth home run of the season.

The Chanticleers added two runs in the fourth inning. Evan Noell and Rice Noel had back-to-back singles before moving to second and third on a wild pitch. Scott Woodward who went 3-for-5 with five RBI singled both runners home. In the sixth, Noel had a bunt single and stole second base before being driven in by Woodard to make the score 7-0.

In the Bulldog eighth, Kevin Weidenbacher and Reed Kreiser singled in front of a walk to Elliott Arrington to load the bases. Schumer's home run brought the Dogs ti within three runs.

Coastal call upon Matt Rein to get the final two outs of the eighth. He then set down Asheville in order in the ninth for his first save of the season.

CCU scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, again it was Woodward who did the damage with a two-run home run, his third of the season.

Nick McCully (6-2) went seven innings allowing just hits hit for the victory. Brookey took the loss allowing four runs on four hits.

Schumer went 2-for-4 on the day while Weidenbacher went3-for-5 and Kreiser went 2-for-4. The rest of the Bulldogs combined went 2-for-24.

The final game of the series will be played at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The game will be televised on ESPNU. Asheville residence can attend as Bulldogs watching party at the Wild Wing Caf? on Biltmore Avenue.
