04.15.2008 | Baseball

SPARTANBURG, S.C.? Justin Schumer hit his fifth home run of the season and then threw the final two innings for his sixth save of the season as UNC Asheville defeated Wofford 6-5 on Tuesday night.

UNC Asheville (15-24) jumped out to a 5-0 lead scoring two runs in the first inning and three more in the fourth inning.

Kevin Mattison led off the game with walk, Danny Baatz singled, and Reed Kreiser walked to load the bases with no one out. A wild pitch scored Mattison and a sacrifice fly by Schumer made it 2-0.

Schumer led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to make it 3-0. Beau Zinman and Johnny Martinez followed with back-to-back singles. Mattison had a two-RBI double to score both runners and put the Dogs up 5-0.

Wofford (19-17) scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sterling Dye drove in both runs with a single to score Mo Seay and Emre Caglayan.

Adam Kearny hit a solo home run for the Terriers in the seventh inning to make the score 5-3. Wofford pulled to 5-4 with an unearned run in the eighth.

Asheville added an insurance run in top of the ninth. Kreiser had a two out double and move to third on a passed ball where he would score a RBI single by Elliott Arrington.

Wofford scored a run in the ninth on a RBI single by Keith Munns but left the tying run stranded at second base.

Asheville used eight pitchers in the game. Starter Chris Brookey (2-0) picked up his second win of the season throwing just one inning. A different pitcher every inning held the lead for Schumer who went two innings allowing two runs (one earned). He struck out four Terrier hitters. John Cornley (0-5) took the loss for Wofford which has lost four straight games.

Tuesday night's victory was the first win for Asheville against a Southern Conference opponent this season and its first victory in a night game this year.

Asheville travels to Furman on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.
