Bulldogs Set to Host Winthrop in Big South Title Game

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville senior guard Bryan Smithson was named Most Valuable Player in the Big South Conference by CollegeInsider.com on Thursday.

 

Smithson enjoyed a sensational senior campaign for the Bulldogs and helped lead the school to a school-record 23 victories and a 23-10 record. Asheville was co-champions of the Big South Conference in the regular season and advanced to the league title game for the first time in five years.  The Bulldogs became the first school in Big South history to be invited to the National Invitational Tournament where the lost to eventual NIT champion Ohio State in the first round, 84-66.

He led the Bulldogs in scoring (16.4), three-pointers made (61), steals (54) and free throw percentage (83.5%).  Smithson led the Big South Conference in free throw percentage for the second straight year.  He was named as a first team all-conference performer and earned a spot on the Big South All-Tournament team.

Last month Smithson was named to the NCCSIA All-State men's basketball team as a Second-Team selection.  He became the first Asheville player to ever be honored by the organization.
