Bulldogs Set to Host Winthrop in Big South Title Game

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's basketball team will attempt to win the 2008 Big South Conference championship Saturday morning when the top-seeded Bulldogs host second-seeded and defending champion Winthrop at Justice Center. Tip-off is at 11:30 a.m. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN 2 and can be heard on WISE Radio (1310-AM). Saturday's game is sold out.

The Bulldogs (23-8) have won five straight and earned a trip to the finals with a hard-fought 75-57 win over fourth-seeded Liberty Thursday night. Asheville was led by Bryan Smithson and Kenny George with 19 points each. Winthrop (21-11) advanced to the semifinals with a 61-53 win over High Point on Thursday.

"We know Saturday's game will be very tough," stated UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. "Winthrop has a good team and is the champion until someone beats them. This is a team that has won a lot of big games over the years."

The Bulldogs did win both meetings this year as Asheville won 71-56 at Justice Center on Feb. 2. The Dogs won last Saturday in Rock Hill, 63-50 to claim a share of the BSC regular-season title and earn the top seed in this week's tournament.

"We played very well in both games," commented Biedenbach. "However, it is always tough to beat a good team three times."

This will be UNC Asheville's sixth appearance in the Big South Conference title game and fourth in the last 10 years. The Bulldogs have a 2-3 record in this game and this will mark the second time Asheville has faced Winthrop in the championship. The Bulldogs won the tournament in 1989 in Rock Hill and then claimed their first ever NCAA appearance in 2003 with a championship game victory over Radford at Liberty. Asheville lost in 1990 to Coastal Carolina, 1998 to Radford and 2000 to Winthrop at the Asheville Civic Center.
