Baseball Falls to George Mason in Second Game of Doubleheader, 6-2

Baseball Falls to High Point on Sunday

HIGH POINT, N.C.? Reed Kreiser hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning but that was all of the offense for UNC Asheville as the Bulldogs fell 11-2 at High Point on Sunday.

The Bulldogs (12-17, 0-3 Big South) scored just five runs in the three game series despite getting 24 hits in the series. On Sunday, the Dogs had two runs on 10 hits but left eight men on base in the game.

High Point (8-18, 3-3 Big South) took advantage of six walks and three hit batters by Bulldog pitching on Sunday. A lead off walk got the Panthers on the board in the third inning. Matt Fulginiti, who walked to lead off was sacrificed to second and scored on a RBI double by Jeff Cowan. One of five doubles hit by the Panthers in the game. Cowen scored on a RBI single by Billy Alvino.

The Panthers added two more in the fourth. Back-to-back singles by Tucker Stobbe and Robby Kuzdale had runners at second and third with no one out. Alfee Wheeler delivered a two RBI double down the left field line to score both runners. High Point made it 5-0 scoring with out a hit in the fifth. A hit batter, two walks and a sacrifice job plated the run.

Asheville made it 5-2 with Kreiser's eighth home run of the season. Justin Schumer who started the game on the mound for Asheville went 3-for-4 at the plate. He had a hit in front of the Kreiser blast.

HPU scored a run in the sixth and then put the game away with five runs in the seventh highlighted by Pablo Rosario's second home run of the year, a three run shot that made it 9-2.

Jamie Serber picked up the win for HPU throwing six innings allowing seven hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out three to move to 2-2 on the season. Schumer took the loss for Asheville falling to 0-3.

High Point pitchers walked just four batters in the series. Of the Panthers 12 hits on Sunday, six went for extra bases. Kevin Weidenbacher went 1-for-4 to increase his hitting streak to 24 games.

Asheville will play its annual exhibition game against the Asheville Tourists on Monday at 7 p.m. at McCormick Field before facing Appalachian State on Tuesday in Boone.
