Bulldogs Split Doubleheader with Brown

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Reed Krieser and Elliott Arrington drove in two runs each to lead UNC Asheville to a 9-3 victory over Brown in the first game of a double-header but the Bulldogs were tagged out at the plate to end the game in a 13-12 loss in the nightcap at Greenwood Field Sunday afternoon.
In the opener, the Bulldogs (11-13) trailed early 1-0 but scored five straight runs to grab a 5-1 lead. Kevin Mattsion led off the third innings with an infield hit and stole second base. Kevin Wiedenbacher singled Mattison to the plate to tie the game. Arrington singled and then Kreiser laid down a sacrifice bunt. The throw to first was wild allowing Wiedenbacher to score and Arrington to move to third base where he would score on a fielder's choice.
Asheville added two more in the fourth and the fifth to build a 7-3 lead. Kreiser sixth home run of the year in the fourth came with Arrington on base. In the fifth, Arrington doubled home Beau Zinman and Catlin Carter.
The Dogs added insurance runs in the eighth as Justin Schumer had a RBI single and Zinman added a sacrifice fly.
Michael Bogaert improved his record to 4-1 by pitching six innings allowing seven hits and three runs (one earned). Ben Buchanan allowed just one hit over the last three innings to earn his first save of the year.
In the nightcap, Brown (5-5) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after an inning and half. The Bulldogs responded with five runs in the bottom of the second. Brett Robinson led off with a walk in front of four consecutive singles by Danny Baatz, Schumer, Carter, and Chris Freeman. Carter and Freeman hits drove in runs. Mattison had a sacrifice fly and Arrington drove in a run with a hit.
The Bears got three more in the fourth and one in the sixth to build their lead back to 11-5. Asheville scored four times in the bottom of the sixth. Freeman led off with a single and scored on a RBI double by Mattison. Mattison went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout. After a walk to Arrington, Kreiser hit his second home run of the day and seventh of the season to make it a two-run game at 11-9.
Brown added two insurance runs in the seventh as J.J. Eno hit his first home run of the year. Steve Daniels who went 4-for-6 with four runs scored singled and went to third on a failed pick off attempt. He would score on a RBI ground out by Ryan Murphy.
The Dogs got a run back in the eighth as Robinson drew a walk and moved to third on a double by Baatz. Schumer's ground out plated Robinson to make the score 13-10 heading to the bottom of the ninth.
A walk to Freeman and a single by Mattison put runners at first and third. A wild pitch made it a two run game and moved Mattison to second base. Wiedenbacher walked to put the tying run on base. After a fly out and a strike out, Robinson singled home Mattison. Baatz hit a groundball to second base that was booted by Ryan Zranda and went into short right field. Wiedenbacher tried to score from second on the play but was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
Freeman went 3-for-4 in game two while Mattison had hits in each game and scored three runs on the day.Schumer was a combined 5-for-10 in the two games.Baatz went 4-for-10 on the day. Kreiser had four RBI and Arrington drove in three runs giving hime 10 RBI in the last three games.
Asheville will travel to Wake Forest on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. game before returning home to McCormick Field to face Western Carolina at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
