ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville placed four players in double figures as the Bulldogs improved to 2-0 on the season with a 91-78 win over neighboring Montreat Sunday evening.

UNC Asheville was led by sophomore forward John Williams who had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He also blocked four shots in 30 minutes of action. Donovan Jones came off the bench to score 14 points, while Reid Augst and freshman Matt Dickey had 11 points each.

The Cavaliers (1-3) had five players in double figures. Vincent Dombroski came off the bench to score a game-high 16 points. Terrell Mosley chipped in 15 points for the visitors. MJ Njoku finished with 13 points and six assists. Matt Rushing and Seth Moore had 10 points apiece.

The Bulldogs led from start to finish as Augst scored six straight points to open the game. Asheville led by as many 25 in the second half before a tremendous rally from Montreat cut the lead to nine at 84-75 with 2:30 remaining. The Dogs scored the next five points to seal the victory.

Asheville dominated the boards with a 52-30 advantage over the Cavaliers. The Bulldogs shot 49 percent (35-of-71) from the field. Freshman J.P. Primm had eight assists and three steals for the Dogs.

“We played well in spurts and did a much better job rebounding,” commented UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We didn't end the game the way we should have as Montreat made a great run at us in the final 10 minutes.

“We're a young team and at times it shows but we got the job done today against a well-coached Montreat team,” added Biedenbach. “I like our attitude and effort, and we'll just keep getting better.”

Primm fed Augst for the first three baskets of the game as Asheville led 6-0 in the first minute of play. The Bulldogs pushed the early lead to 11 at 18-7 but the Cavaliers rallied behind 11 points from Dombroski in the opening half to close to 37-32 with 1:06 to go.

Asheville finished the half with a 6-2 run, including a tap-in from Dickey at the buzzer to give the Bulldogs a 43-34 halftime lead.

The home team roared out of the gates in the second half and raced to a 71-46 lead on a lay-up from Primm at the 9:40 mark.

Montreat trailed 76-53 with 7:45 left but went on a 20-6 run over the next four minutes to close the game to 82-73 against the Bulldog reserves. The Cavaliers hit four treys during the run.

UNC Asheville plays next on Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Big South rival Liberty at Justice Center at 2 p.m. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN as part of the network's 24 Hours of Hoops.
