UNC Asheville Baseball Heads to College of Charleston for Three-Game Series

Bulldog Baseball Players Perform Well in Summer Leagues

The UNC Asheville baseball program had 14 different players play summer ball and here is a round-up of how those players performed.

 

The Bulldogs played six players in North Carolina in the Coastal Plains League. Dan Weller and Carson McLean pitched for the Asheboro Copperheads. Weller only pitched two games before taking the rest of the summer off due to shoulder maintenance. However, he was very dominant in those two starts. He went 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA in 18 innings pitched. Weller allowed just two runs and struck out 11. McLean went 3-2 and was Asheboro's closer with five saves. He struck out 26 in 20 appearances.

 

Danny Baatz and Justin Schumer played for the Outer Banks Daredevils. Schumer pitched and played in the field at Outer Banks. He had 2.75 ERA in 55.2 innings and struck out 39 hitters. On the offensive side, Schumer hit .231 with two home runs, six doubles and drove in 17 runs. Baatz joined the team late in the summer and started in 14 of the last 20 games. He hit .192 with two home runs, two doubles and eight RBI.

 

Grier Harrington pitched for the Columbia Blowfish and pitched very well down the stretch. He went 2-1 in his last nine appearances with 14 strikeouts to just six walks.

 

Senior shortstop Kevin Weidenbacher played for the Wilson Tobs and had a solid year. He hit .293 with 14 RBI and three stolen bases. He only struck out 16 times in 116 at bats.

 

Michael Vaughn played in the Great Lakes League with the Southern Ohio Copperheads. He hit. 286 with four home runs, six doubles and 32 RBI. Vaughn finished the season with a .444 slugging percentage.

 

UNC Asheville had two players in the Kansas Jayhawk League as Reed Kreiser and Matt Dalby played for the Joplin Slashers. Kreiser hit .285 with eight doubles and 30 RBI. Dalby pitched in 25 innings of relief and went 1-0 with three saves. He struck out 23 and walked just 10.

 

Danny Lammers played for Leesburg in the Florida Collegiate League. He didn't' play much due to an injury but did hit .235 with a double and four RBI.

 

Dillon Waters pitched for the Gwinnett Astros of the Sun Belt League. Waters did a nice job on the hill as he went 1-2 with three saves and a 3.15 ERA. He struck out 20 and walked just five.

 

Catlin Carter and Jeremy Hall stayed in Asheville and played for the Asheville Redbirds of the Southern Collegiate League. Carter had a great summer and earned a spot in the SCBL All-Star Game. He hit .295 with five doubles and 16 RBI. On the mound, Carter pitched in six games and collected two saves. Hall went 2-1 with one save and struck out 25 hitters to just six walks.

 

Taylor Wohlwend traveled the farthest to play as he competed in the Hawaii Collegiate League. The California native pitched for the league champion Kauai Menehunes and had great success. He led the league in appearances with 18 and was second in saves at five. Wohlwend had a 1.67 ERA with 19 strikeouts.
