ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville got goals from four different players en route to a 4-0 men's collegiate soccer win over Gardner-Webb on a cold and windy day at Greenwood Field.

Asheville (4-11-1) won its second straight match as the Bulldogs broke open a close match with three goals in the second half.

“This is a nice victory to get on Senior Day,” commented UNC Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “It's been a frustrating year to get results but to our lads credit they have continued to work hard and gotten better. We still have soccer to play and hopefully we can build on these two results.

“We're not four goals better than Gardner-Webb,” added Cornish. “Gardner-Webb had some great opportunities to score but didn't and when we had opportunities to score we did.”

Gardner-Webb fell to 3-15-1 on the season. The Runnin' Bulldogs controlled play for much of the first half as it out-shot Asheville, 7-5. Richard Godfrey had three shots in the opening period and just missed scoring on two of them.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 35th minute of the first half when Daniel Bandoly sent a perfect pass to Alex Morrow in the box. Morrow fired in a shot from eight yards out to give Asheville a 1-0 lead at 35:22.

Leading 1-0 at intermission, the Bulldogs broke the game open with two quick goals. Caleb Alexander scored on a 10-yard blast off a feed from J.W. Gallagher to push the lead to 2-0 at 47:23

Five minutes later, Asheville struck again as Ryan Haupt tallied his second goal of the year at 52:04. Gallagher was credited with his second assist of the match.

Asheville completed the scoring at the 83:58 mark when leading scorer Scott Szymanski scored his eight goal of the season. The play started when goalkeeper Phillip Horner sent a long kick down the right sideline that was played by Nathan Neal. Neal flicked it to Szymanski who tucked a shot into the lower part of the goal for a 4-0 lead.

It was Asheville's first shutout of the season as Horner and Michael Pereira each played 45 minutes. Pereira made four saves in the first half to keep GWU off the scoreboard.

UNC Asheville plays next in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Tournament next Thursday (Nov. 15) against an opponent yet to be determined.
