Men's Basketball Faces Brevard Tuesday Night

11.12.2007 | Men's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville men's basketball team hopes to extend the best start of a season in 18 years when the Bulldogs host Brevard College at Justice Center Tuesday night starting at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast by WISE (1310-AM) and can be seen for via video-streaming at www.uncabulldogs.com or www.bigsouthsports.com.

UNC Asheville is 2-0 on the season and is looking to go 3-0 for the first time since the 1989-90 campaign. Asheville opened the season Friday night with a hard-fought 78-75 victory over Furman at Justice Center and then used a strong second half to pull away from Lees-McRae on Sunday, 74-48. The Bulldogs played much of the game without their starting backcourt as senior guard K.J. Garland missed the game with a thumb injury, while senior guard Bryan Smithson hurt his hand midway through the first half and did not return. Garland is questionable for tonight's game. Smithson is doubtful for Tuesday evening's tilt with Brevard.

Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach was proud of his club for the way the Bulldogs responded in the second half against Lees-McRae. The Dogs led by just six at 32-26 at halftime and knew that Garland and Smithson would not play in the second half. Asheville turned things up defensively and got contributions from everyone and rolled to a 74-48 victory. Senior forward Vincent James scored a team-high 18 points against the Bobcats, while Kenny George just missed the first triple-double in school history with 15 points, 10 blocked shots and nine rebounds. His 10 blocked shots set a school record and tied a Big South record. The Chicago native is shooting 73 percent (11-of-15) from the field. He's averaging 13.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.5 blocked shots per game.

“We did a good job in the second half in all facets of the game,” commented Biedenbach. “The line-up we had in to start the second half is not the line-up I thought we would be using. However, our guys really played hard and battled on both ends of the floor. We weren't perfect with turnovers and gave up a lot of offensive rebounds but I liked the way we fought and scrapped.”

Asheville turns its attention to a talented Brevard squad that will invade Justice Center Tuesday night. The Bulldogs had a tough time with the Tornados last year before winning, 78-70. Reid Augst led a balanced Asheville attack with 12 points. Jonathan Whitson led Brevard and took game-high scoring honors with 22 points and six assists.

The Tornados went 9-18 last year but should be much better this season.

“I've always respected the great job that Mike Jones (Brevard's head coach) does every year, and we'll have a serious challenge from them Tuesday night,” stated Biedenbach.  “They (Brevard) were a young team last season and played us pretty tough. We're going to have to play well for 40 minutes to beat them.”
