James & George Lead Bulldogs Past Lees-McRae, 74-48

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Vincent James scored 18 points and Kenny George just missed the first triple-double in school history with 15 points, 10 blocked shots and nine rebounds as UNC Asheville posted a 74-48 non-conference win over Lees-McRae Sunday afternoon.

The win propelled the Bulldogs to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 1989-90 season. The victory was also a solid one for Asheville because the Bulldogs did not have their starting backcourt for most of the game. Senior guard K.J. Garland missed the game with a finger injury, while senior guard Bryan Smithson injured his hand midway through the first half and did not play the rest of the game.

George helped the Bulldogs stay unbeaten as he set a new Asheville single-game record for blocked shots with 10. The 10 blocks tied a Big South Conference single-game record with Pascual Fleury of Maryland Baltimore County set in the 1994-95 season. As a team, UNC Asheville blocked 15 shots tying a school record. The other time the Bulldogs blocked 15 shots came against Elon in the 1997-98 season.

James went 6-of-7 from the field and 6-of-10 from the free throw line. George went 7-of-10 from the field and 1-of-1 from the charity stripe for a new career-high in points with 15. Asheville shot better than 50 percent for the second straight game as it went 25-of-45 for 56 percent.

Lees-McRae was led by Modestas Riauka with 11 points. Aaron Wiley chipped in 10 points. Raysean Hairston just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

“We battled through some things today to pick up the victory,” commented UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “I was proud of our effort in the second half and we came together to beat a scrappy Lees-McRae team. There are some things we need to work on as we gave up way too many offensive rebounds (21). But overall it was a good performance and it's always good to win.”

The Bobcats (0-1) battled the Bulldogs tough in the first half and led 23-21 at the six-minute mark on a dunk by Hairston.

However, Asheville went on an 11-0 run keyed by its defense to lead 32-23. George keyed the run with six points on three dunks and the 7-7 center swatted away four LMC shots in the final four minutes of the half. Jesse Hoots knocked down a trey as the first half ended to get the Bobcats within, 32-26.

Asheville sealed the win midway through the second half when it went on a 20-4 run to expand its lead from 39-33 to 59-37. James and George combined for 12 points during the run.

The Bulldogs defense was very tough in the second half as they forced 13 LMC turnovers and allowed the visitors to shoot just 26 percent from the field (9-of-35).

UNC Asheville hosts Brevard College Tuesday night at Justice Center starting at 7 p.m.

NOTES ? UNC Asheville will try to go 3-0 for the first time since the 1989-90 season...dating back to last season the Bulldogs have won six of their last seven games...Asheville has shot better than 50 percent in five of its last eight games...the Bulldogs shot 87 percent (13-of-15) from the free throw line in the second half after shooting just 44 percent (7-of-16) in the opening half.
