ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Patrick Tate's golden goal in the 108th minute gave UNC Asheville a stunning 2-1 overtime victory over Clemson at Greenwood Field Tuesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (2-7-1) ended a frustrating eight-game winless streak with the victory. It was Asheville's first ever victory over Clemson in seven tries. It was also the Bulldogs first win over an ACC team in 17 games.

It was a tough defeat for the Tigers (4-7-1). Clemson out-shot Asheville, 21-12 and had 15 corner kicks to just one for the Dogs.

“This is a superb victory,” stated a delighted UNC Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “It's been such a frustrating year but our lads were ready to play today and we were able to get a result over a great Clemson team.

“We've been playing good soccer,” added Cornish. “However, we simply haven't made the plays you need to make to get a result. Today we made those plays both on offense and defense. And we needed every one of them to have a chance at winning.”

The winning goal came late in the second overtime period. Ryan Haupt sent a pass to Tate. The junior midfielder headed up the field and then unloaded a shot from 20 yards out that flew past Clemson goalkeeper Joseph Bednik into the back of the net for a 2-1 Bulldog win.

“Patrick really hit that last shot,” stated Cornish. “When he first hit the ball, I thought it was going wide and suddenly it found the back of the net. We have seen that happen to us a few times, so it was nice to be on the winning end of one of those for once.”

Clemson opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Nathan Thornton scored his third goal of the year off a pass from Michael Brooks. Tommy Drake also had an assist on the play.

The Bulldogs tied it early in the second half when Scott Szymanski stole a Tiger pass and went one-on-one with Bendik. Symanski cracked a shot from 10 yards out into the far left-hand corner to knot the game at 1-1 in the 47th minute.

The Tigers controlled play after that as they out-shot the Dogs, 11-3 in the second half. However, Asheville goalkeeper Phillip Horner made six saves in the period and the Bulldog defenders cleared two more from the line.

UNC Asheville gets back in Big South Conference play Saturday night when the Bulldogs play at Radford. The match starts at 7 p.m.
