Head Coach Honey Brown announced on May 17, 2022 that Ivey Slaughter had been hired on to join her coaching staff. Slaughter came to Asheville after spending the past two seasons as a graduate assistant at her alma mater, Florida State.Â
Asheville won 11 games and four in the Big South Conference in Slaughter's second season in 2023-24. She coached McKinley Brooks-Sumpter, who was an All-Conference Second Team selection while Millie Brown was the team's All-Academic Team selection.Â
In her first season on the staff, Asheville posted an 11-19 record including a 7-11 mark in Big South Conference play. Some highlights of the season included a three-game win streak to start the month of February with wins over High Point, Radford and USC Upstate. The Bulldogs also pulled off a miraculous comeback in the first round of the Big South Conference Tournament, erasing a 17-point deficit to stun Winthrop 59-58. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter was named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention squad, as well as the All-Academic Team. In addition, the Bulldogs ranked second in the conference and 34th nationally in three-point shooting defense, holding teams to 27.7 percent from beyond the arc. Â
Slaughter excelled in her time at Florida State, ending her playing career second in games played and started (132) third in made free throws (372), fourth in steals (222) and fifth in free throw attempts (513) and makes (912). Racking up 21 double-doubles in her career, Slaughter was a two-time All-ACC Academic Team and was the team's defensive player of the year as a sophomore. Following her graduation in 2017, Slaughter would play three years of basketball overseas before pursuing a master's degree at her alma mater.  A native of Macon, Georgia, Slaughter was a standout athlete in both basketball and track, graduating from Tattnall Square Academy with honors.
"Ivey is a great addition to our staff and I am beyond excited," Brown said. "Her knowledge and experience of the post position comes from some of the highest levels, having played and worked in the ACC as well as playing overseas. I'm excited to learn from her and help her grow as a coach but even more thrilled for our players to work with her each day in practice. At FSU she has been responsible for numerous jobs which will serve her well with what will be asked of her here. Ivey will add value to our recruiting because of her ties regionally. She is someone with a great personality and easy to talk to that will relate to our players and Bulldog fans. She'll get started at the beginning of June and I can't wait."
"I am beyond excited and blessed to have the opportunity to join Coach Brown and the rest of this amazing UNC Asheville staff," said Ivey. "I can't thank the UNC Asheville administration and Coach Brown enough for trusting me to fulfill this position. It's an honor and pleasure to join the Bulldog Family. Go Bulldogs!!"
