Baseball Falls in Back and Forth Battle with Winthrop on Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball fell in a back and forth battle with Winthrop by a score of 10-6 on Saturday (May 2) at Greenwood Field.
 
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Winthrop opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the second before both teams posted scoreless frames in the third. After Asheville held the Eagles off the board in the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs got on the board with two runs in the home half of the inning to cut the deficit in half. After Blaize Johnson drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth, Owen Michelson would blast the 0-1 pitch over the left center field wall for his fourth home run of the season and fourth of his career to get Asheville back within two. After Drew Turner posted a scoreless frame in the top of the fifth, Asheville responded with three runs in the home half for a 5-4 lead going to the sixth. Logan Lowe opened the inning with a single to right center, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zeb Swangim. Jake Pereira drew a walk to put two runners on, before Pereira was put out on a single on the infield by Patrick Gillen. Johnson would deliver the big blow in the inning, blasting a two-run double to right to score both Lowe and Gillen and tie the game 4-4. Michelson drew a four-pitch walk off a new Winthrop pitcher in the inning with two outs, before Jake Minarik would bloop a single to center that scored Johnson to give the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead. Winthrop tied the game with one run in the top of the sixth, before Asheville would re-gain its 6-5 lead with one run in the home half. Gillen brought home Lowe on an infield single in the inning to give Asheville a 6-5 lead heading to the seventh, before the Eagles would tie the game 6-6 with one run in the top of the seventh. After the Bulldogs were unable to score in the home half of the inning, Winthrop would bring the game to its final score with four runs in the top of the eighth.
 
Gillen, Tyler Parks, Lowe and Swangim each had two hits in the game for Asheville, while Johnson, Michelson, Minarik and Eric Krumpe each had one hit in the game. Johnson and Lowe each scored twice, while Gillen and Michelson each scored a run in the game for Asheville. Johnson and Michelson each drove in two runs in the game, while Gillen and Minarik each drove in one run. Turner (4-7) took the loss on the bump for the Bulldogs, allowing seven runs on 11 hits with three walks and six strikeouts through seven innings before handing the ball off to Landon Gross. The sidewinder allowed three runs on four hits over the final two innings of play, with one walk during his outing.
