Bulldogs Ride Smith's Complete Game Shutout Past Winthrop 9-0 on Sunday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball rode redshirt senior Cooper Smith's complete game shutout past Winthrop by a score of 9-0 on Sunday (May 3) at Greenwood Field. It marks the first complete game shutout for a Bulldog since Ryan Dull blanked Saint Peter's in a 3-0 win back on Feb. 25, 2012 and also Asheville's first shutout win over Winthrop since a 6-0 win back on May 20, 2022.

After the teams exchanged scoreless frames through the first two innings, the Bulldogs scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third when Blaize Johnson singled to center for Asheville's first hit of the game to score Zeb Swangim from second. After another blank frame from Winthrop in the top of the fourth, Asheville added two runs to take a 3-0 lead to the fifth. Jake Minarik led off the inning with a double down the left field line, before Tyler Parks moved him to third with a single through the right side. After a Winthrop pitching change, Eric Krumpe drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases with no one out in the inning. After a double play left Asheville with two still on and two out in the frame, Parks would score on a wild pitch while Krumpe would advance to third on the play. Zeb Swangim would put a ball in play that would result in an error allowing Krumpe to score from third in the inning as well. The Bulldogs would stretch the lead to 6-0 in the fifth with three runs in the inning, with Patrick Gillen leading off the inning with a walk. Owen Michelson was hit by a pitch with one out to put two runners on, before Minarik was hit by a pitch to load the bases after a Winthrop pitching change. Parks would deliver a two-run single up the middle to score Gillen and Michelson, before Krumpe drew a walk to load the bases yet again. Lowe would bring home Minarik with a sacrifice fly to right to cap off the inning for the Bulldogs. After a scoreless sixth and Smith continuing to hold Winthrop off the board in the seventh, Asheville would add another three runs in the home half of the seventh to ultimately bring the game to its final score. Minarik reached on a Winthrop error with one out in the inning, before a fielder's choice off the bat of Parks saw another Winthrop error allow Minarik to advance to third putting runners on the corners with one out. Parks stole second after the second out was recorded, before Lowe walked to load the bases. Swangim delivered the big blow in the inning with a double to right center to clear the bases and stretch Asheville's lead to 9-0. The Bulldog defense polished off the game with a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to clinch the win.

Parks paced the offense in the game with two hits, while Johnson, Minarik and Swangim each had one hit in the game. Minarik and Parks each scored twice, while Gillen, Michelson, Krumpe, Lowe and Swangim each scored one run in the game. Swangim drove in a career-high three runs in the game, while Parks drove in two and Johnson and Lowe each drove in one run in the game. Parks also stole one base in the game. Smith fired 130 pitches with 83 strikes in the effort, scattering just five hits with a career-high nine punchouts and two walks.
