Bulldogs Take Series at Radford with 6-4 Win on Sunday

RADFORD, Va. - UNC Asheville Baseball took its Big South Conference series at Raford with a 6-4 win on Sunday (May 10).

Radford jumped out a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first, before the teams traded scoreless frames in the second and Asheville responded with two runs to tie the game in the top of the third. Jake Pereira led the inning off with an infield single to shortstop, before Logan Lowe drew a four-pitch walk to put two runners on for Tyler Parks. Parks would lash a single through the right side that would score Pereira and move Lowe to second. Owen Michelson would reach on a fielder's choice that would allow Lowe to advance to third, before stealing second to put two runners in scoring position for Patrick Gillen. Gillen would ground out on the infield with Lowe scoring on the play as the Bulldogs knotted things up. Lucas Boesen would hold the Highlanders off the board through the sixth inning, while Asheville added two runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 4-2. Gillen led off the inning with a four-pitch walk before stealing second, later scoring on a double down the right field line by Ben Green. Green advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Hemphill, before Coleman McGinnis laid down a bunt to squeeze him home and push Asheville's lead to two. Radford would get one run back in the bottom of the seventh to get back within 4-3, before Asheville added two more runs in the top of the eighth. Michelson led off the eighth with a walk, before moving to third on a single through the right side by Gillen. Michelson would score on a passed ball that moved Gilen to second, before Gillen moved to third on a single to left by Green. Green and Gillen executed some shifty baserunning on the corners that allowed Gillen to score Asheville's final run of the game. Radford would add one run in the eighth to bring the game to its final score. Branden Barna was able to shut it down for his second save in as many days, his second of the season and second of his career. Â

Green paced the offense in the game going 3-4 with one RBI and one run scored, while Gillen and Pereira each had two hits in the game along with one hit from Parks. Parks, Gillen and McGinnis each drove in a run, while Gillen scored twice along with one run scored each by Lowe, Michelson, Green and Pereira. Gillen stole two bases in the game, while Green and Michelson each stole one base in the contest. Boesen (2-3) earned the win on the bump, allowing just three runs on seven hits through 6.1 innings for a quality start. Boesen also walked three and fired five strikeouts in the game. Barna earned the save, allowing one run on four hits through 2.2 innings of relief without a walk and picking up two strikeouts.
