Baseball Battles, but Drops Friday Night Affair with Winthrop

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball battled but dropped its Friday night (May 1) affair with Winthrop by a score of 5-1.

Winthrop struck first with two runs in the top of the first, before adding one run in the third after a scoreless second inning for both teams. Asheville's lone run came in the third inning when Jake Pereira singled to right to score Logan Lowe, before Winthrop added one run each in the fifth inning and the seventh inning to bring the game to its final score.

Owen Michelson paced the offense with two hits in the game, while Jake Minarik, Zeb Swangim and Pereira each had one hit in the game. Lowe scored the lone run in the game for the Bulldogs, while Pereira drove in the run. Lowe also stole a base in the game for the Bulldogs. Garrett Crum took the loss on the bump for the Bulldogs, allowing four runs on seven hits through 4.1 innings with three walks and four strikeouts. Landon Gross contributed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief allowing two hits with one walk and one strikeout, before passing the ball to Branden Barna. Barna allowed one unearned run on one hit through 1.1 innings with one walk and one strikeout, before TJ Brooks would finish things off on the mound for Asheville. Brooks fired two innings of scoreless relief scattering two hits with one strikeout in the game.
