Baseball Drops Sunday Slugfest at Wofford

Asheville started the scoring in the first inning, plating two runs in the opening frame. Blaize Johnson and Owen Michelson drew back-to-back one-out walks, before Eric Krumpe singled to center field to load the bases. Jake Minarik would single to center field to score Johnson, before Gillen would reach on a fielder's choice to score Michelson and put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Wofford would answer with three runs in the home half of the first, before the teams traded scoreless frames in the second. Wofford would jump out in front with three runs in the bottom of the third for a 6-2 lead, before the Bulldogs would answer with four runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game. Tyler Parks led off the inning with a double to left, before advancing to third on a Ben Green groundout. Jake Pereira would put a ball on the ground that brought Parks home, while Pereira advanced to second on an error on the play in the Wofford infield. Pereira would move to third on a fly ball by Logan Lowe, before Johnson would draw a walk and proceed to steal second. Michelson would step to the plate and blast his third home run of the season to center field to tie the game. Wofford would again take a lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs for an 8-6 lead as the game headed to the fifth inning. The Bulldogs would continue the back-and-forth ride in the game in the fifth, with three runs to take a 9-8 lead. Minarik led off the inning with a double, before later scoring on a one-out double to left center off the bat of Parks. After a Wofford pitching change, Green would welcome the new Wofford arm with a two-run blast to left for his fourth of the season and fourth of his career. After a scoreless bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth, Wofford stormed back in a big way with nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to re-take the lead for good. Wofford then finished the game with three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Minarik and Parks each paced the offense with two hits in the game, while Lowe, Johnson, Josh Williams, Michelson, Krumpe, Green and Pereira each had one hit in the game. Johnson, Michelson and Parks each scored twice in the game, while Minarik, Green and Pereira each scored once. Michelson drove in a team-high three runs in the game, while Green drove in two and Minarik, Gillen, Parks and Pereira each brought in one run. Johnson also stole one base in the game. Cooper Smith got the start for the Bulldogs allowing eight runs, six earned through 3.2 innings of work on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Matthew Hall (4-2) took the loss in relief, while Ryland Howell finished the game. Howell tossed 1.2 innings of relief allowing three runs, two earned on two hits with three walks and one strikeout.
