Big Seventh Inning Dooms Baseball in Series Opener at Longwood Friday Night

Longwood scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first, before the teams would trade scoreless frames into the fourth. Asheville tied the game in the top of the fourth when Ben Green singled home Blaize Johnson for Asheville's first run of the night. Longwood answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead, before Asheville answered the bell with two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game 3-3. Coleman McGinnis led off the inning with a single to left, before Jake Pereira drew a walk to put two runners on with no one out. Logan Lowe laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up, before Blaize Johnson was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. After Longwood recorded the second out in the inning, Owen Michelson would single to third base to score McGinnis extending the inning with Jake Minarik at the plate. Pereira would steal home to tie the game at 3-3 in the inning. After a scoreless sixth on both sides, Asheville would take a brief 4-3 lead when Patrick Gillen singled home Logan Lowe. Longwood responded with five runs in the home half of the seventh to ultimately bring the game to its final score. The teams traded scoreless frames to end the game.

Gillen paced the offense with two hits, while Michelson, Green, McGinnis and Pereira each had one hit in the game. Lowe, Johnson, McGinnis and Pereira each scored one run in the game, while Lowe, Green and Pereira each stole one base in the game. Gillen, Michelson and Green each drove in one run in the game. The Bulldogs defense also turned a pair of double plays in the game. Lucas Boesen posted a solid start on the bump in the game, allowing three runs on five hit through six innings with eight walks and eight strikeouts. Matthew Hall (4-1) took the loss in relief, while Branden Barna posted 1.2 innings of scoreless relief with one hit and one walk.
