Bulldogs Power Past Alabama A&M for Saturday Doubleheader Sweep

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball powered past Alabama A&M for a doubleheader sweep on Saturday (Mar. 7), winning game one 6-1 and game two 11-7.

Game One (Seven Innings)
Â
Asheville struck first in the bottom of the opening frame when Blaize Johnson launched his sixth home run of the season and 12th of his career over the right field wall for a 1-0 lead. After the teams traded scoreless frames headed to the bottom of the fourth, before Zeb Swangim would lead off the bottom of the fourth with a single to third base. Eric Krumpe then stepped to the plate and blasted his first career home run over the right field wall to put the Bulldogs up 3-0. Asheville would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, with the inning starting with a Patrick Gillen walk. Johnson then doubled down the right field line to push Gillen to third, before Gillen would score on a sacrifice fly to right field by Ben Green with Johnson moving to third on the play. Jake Minarik would score Johnson on a sacrifice fly to center field to put Asheville up 5-0 in the game. The teams would bring the game to its final score each putting up one run in the sixth inning, with Alabama A&M scoring an unearned run in the top half of the feame and Chase Klingemann driving in Coleman McGinnis on a double down the left field line in the home half of the inning.

Logan Lowe, Johnson and McGinnis each paced the offense with two hits in the game, while Gillen, Green, Swangim, Krumpe and Klingemann each had one hit in the win. Johnson scored two runs, while Gillen, Swangim, Krumpe and McGinnis each scored one run in the game. Krumpe drove in two runs in the contest, along with one RBI each from Johnson, Green, Minarik and Klingemann. Drew Turner (3-1) picked up the win going the distance on the mound, one unearned run on just two hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Game Two (Nine Innings)

Alabama A&M scored first taking a 2-0 lead to the home half, before Asheville would respond with seven runs in the home half. Lowe and Gillen began the inning with back-to-back four-pitch walks, before Johnson would single to left center and score Lowe while moving Gillen to second. Green would single through the right side to score Gillen and move Johnson to third, before Minarik drew a walk to load the bases. Krumpe would draw a one-out walk with the bases full to bring in a run, before McGinnis and Klingemann would follow suit by drawing bases-loaded walks to bring more runs home. Lowe would come back around and deliver the big blow in the inning, sending a single back up the middle to score Krumpe and McGinnis. Alabama A&M would respond with two runs in the second and one in the third, before Asheville would counter with a run in the bottom of the third when Krumpe came home on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Lowe. Asheville would hold Alabama A&M scoreless in the fourth, before putting up two more runs in the home half. Krumpe began the two-out rally with a single to second base, before McGinnis doubled to left center to move Krumpe to third. Klingemann would walk to load the bases, before Lowe would deliver another two-run single to score McGinnis and Krumpe. Alabama A&M would plate one in the fifth and one in the sixth while holding Asheville scoreless for the next three innings, before Asheville would bring the game to its final score with one run in the eighth when Krumpe doubled to right center to bring home Minarik.

Lowe went 3-3 in the game with a career-high five runs batted in to pace the offense, while Johnson and Krumpe each had two hits and Green, Minarik, McGinnis and Klingemann each had one hit in the game. Krumpe registered his first career multi-hit game along with a career-high two RBI in the game, while Johnson, Green, McGinnis and Klingemann each drove in one run in the game. Krumpe scored a career-high three runs in the game, while Minarik and McGinnis each scored twice and Lowe, Gillen, Johnson and Green each scored once. Lowe also stole one base in the game. Daylinh Nguyen-Brown got the start for the Bulldogs allowing five runs, four earned through 2.1 innings with four walks and two strikeouts. Matthew Hall (1-0) would pick up the win out of the bullpen, firing 2.2 innings allowing one run on four hits with two walks and four punchouts before TJ Brooks and Nick Bruno would combine for the next couple outs. Garrett Crum would earn his first save of the season, taking the final 3.1 innings scoreless scattering just two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
