Baseball Falls Short in Slugfest Against Morehead State on Tuesday
03.10.2026 | Baseball
Â
After the Bulldog defense worked a three-up three-down top half of the first, the Bulldogs struck first in a big way in the home half with four runs in the inning. Logan Lowe worked a leadoff walk in the inning, before Patrick Gillen singled through the left side to put two runners on for Blaize Johnson. Johnson flew out to deep center to move both runners up, before Ben Green reached on a fielding error that allowed Lowe to score and advanced Gillen to third. Jake Minarik would single on a cue ball to second base, scoring Gillen and advancing Green to second before the second out was recorded. Eric Krumpe would step to the plate and drive his first career triple into the right field corner to score both Green and Minarik to push Asheville's lead to 4-0. Morehead State would respond in an even bigger way in the top of the second with seven runs to take a three-run lead. Asheville would hold Morehead State off the board in the top of the third, before getting one back in the bottom of the third when Coleman McGinnis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Johnson. After Morehead State added one in the fourth and one in the fifth, Asheville would respond with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut the deficit to just 9-8. Swangim would start the fifth with a one-out walk, before McGinnis would keep the rally alive with a two-out single to center. Both men moved up on a wild pitch, before Chase Klingemann reached on a throwing error on the Morehead State infield that allowed both men to score. The Bulldogs would mount another two-out rally in the sixth, when Johnson knocked a ground rule double into the right field corner to get Green to the plate. Green would drop a single into right center to score Johnson, before the Bulldogs were able to keep some traffic on the bases. Minarik would step to the plate and single to center, pushing Green to third. After a Morehead State pitching change, the Bulldogs appeared to pull off a perfectly executed double steal, with Minarik swiping second and Green swiping home initially. Morehead State challenged the call on the play at the plate, and Green was called out upon review leaving the Eagles lead at 9-8 heading to the seventh.
Â
Morehead State seized all of the momentum from that point, scoring five runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to push their lead to 16-8. Asheville would plate three runs in the bottom of the ninth to bring the game to its final score. Johnson led off the ninth with a double to right center, before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Minarik would rip his first career triple into the right field corner to score Johnson, before Krumpe would launch his second home of the season down the right field line to ultimately bring the game to its final score.
Â
Johnson continued his hot start to the season, posting a career-best 4-5 night with two doubles and three runs scored, while Minarik had three hits and Krumpe and McGinnis each had two hits in the game. Lowe, Gillen and Green each also had one hit in the game for the Bulldogs. Minarik scored two runs in the game, while Lowe, Gillen, Green, Swangim, Krumpe and McGinnis each scored once in the game. Krumpe drove in a career-high four runs in the game, while Minarik had two RBI in the game along with one each from Green and McGinnis. Daylinh Nguyen Brown (1-2) took the loss on the bump for the Bulldogs going 1.2 innings allowing seven runs, three earned on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. He was relieved by Ryland Howell, who allowed one run on three hits through 1.2 innings with one walk and one strikeout. He then handed the ball off to Nic Melton, who went 1.2 innings of relief allowing one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout. Garrett Crum then handled the next 2.2 innings of relief, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Landon Gross tossed the final 1.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. McGinnis also had a career day defensively behind the plate, gunning down four runners and making a diving play for a foul ball that resulted in an out.
