Bulldogs Sweep Saturday at Jackson State Round Robin

JACKSON, Miss. – UNC Asheville Baseball swept its Saturday (Feb. 28) action at Jackson State's round robin with an 8-2 win over Alcorn State and a 7-1 win over Jackson State. Â

Game One vs. Alcorn State

The Bulldogs scored two runs in the second inning and one in the third to jump out to a 3-0 lead through three innings. Ben Green began the second inning with his first career triple to left, before scoring on an Owen Michelson double. After a groundout moved Michelson to third, he would score on a Tyler Parks groundout for the second run of the inning. Asheville would add to its lead when Jake Minarik would score on a Michelson infield hit. The Bulldogs would later pull away with four runs in the sixth, keeping Alcorn State off the board through six innings. Michelson led off the inning taking first base on a hit by pitch, before advancing to second on a groundout. Parks would reach on an infield single, before Zeb Swangim would rip a double to left center to push Parks to third and score Michelson. After an Alcorn State pitching change, Logan Lowe welcomed the new Braves arm with a single through the left side that scored Parks and advanced Swangim to third. Patrick Gillen would follow suit with a single through the left side that would score Swangim and push Lowe to second, before Minarik would draw a walk to load the bases. Blaize Johnson would bring home the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly that would score Lowe. Asheville would score one more run in the top of the seventh when Chase Klingemann would score thanks to some crafty baserunning. Alcorn State would plate one in the seventh and one in the eighth to bring the game to its final score.

Michelson scored twice in the contest, while Lowe, Minarik, Green, Klingemann, Parks and Swangim each crossed the plate once. Game Two vs. Jackson State

Jackson State scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third, before Asheville would tie the game in the top of the fourth on Jake Minarik's first home run of the season. After a scoreless fifth, Asheville would blow the game open in the sixth with six runs to ultimately bring the game to its final score. Lowe led the inning off taking his base after being hit by a pitch, before Gillen singled to center to put runners on first and second with no one out. Johnson would single through the right side to load the bases, before Green scored Lowe on a sacrifice fly to right with Gillen moving to third on the play. Gillen would come home on a miscue in the Jackson State infield, before Minarik singled to move Johnson to second with just one out. Michelson would double to left to score Johnson and push Minarik to third, before Klingemann singled in the infield to score Minarik. McGinnis would continue the hit parade in the inning with a single to right to yet again load the bases, before Lowe would come back up with two outs and single to center to score Michelson before an error on the same play allowed Klingemann to score. The teams would trade scoreless frames through the last three innings as Asheville completed the sweep on the day.

Turner would give way to Branden Barna who tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits and two walks. Nick Bruno would finish off the game for the Bulldogs, firing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with two walks and one strikeout.
