JACKSON, Miss. - UNC Asheville Baseball battled but dropped its weekend finale at Jackson State by a score of 6-5 on Sunday (Mar. 1).
Â
After the teams traded scoreless frames through the first two innings, Asheville struck first with three runs in the top half of the third. Coleman McGinnis began the inning with a one-out single to center, before Zeb Swangim singled on the infield to put runners at first and second. Logan Lowe would single to shortstop to load the bases, before a Patrick Gillen single to center would break the scoreless tie and bring home McGinnis and Swangim for a 2-0 Bulldogs lead. Blaize Johnson would single to right to load the bases yet again, before Lowe would score on a Ben Green groundout to cap off the scoring in the inning for Asheville. Jackson State would rally with one run in the bottom of the fourth and a five-spot in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-3 lead, before the Bulldogs would get back within one with two runs in the top of the sixth. The frame began with a Jake Minarik double down the right field line and a Tyler Parks walk, before Minarik was put out at third on a fielder's choice for the first out. McGinnis would lace a single to right to load the bases with one out, before Swangim welcomed a new Jackson State pitcher to the game with a double to left center to score Parks and Chase Klingemann. The Bulldogs would load the bases again later in the inning, but that would be it for scoring for the remainder of the game. The Bulldogs were able to contain the Jackson State offense for the remaining three home frames and hold them scoreless, but Jackson State held strong defensively to secure the home victory.
