Bulldogs Rout Mississippi Valley State for Mercy Rule Victory on Friday

JACKSON, Miss. - UNC Asheville Baseball routed Mississippi Valley 13-1 in seven innings to open the weekend on Friday (Mar. 13).

The Bulldogs struck for four runs in the top of the first for a 4-0 lead, before Mississippi Valley State got one back in the home half. Patrick Gillen started the inning with a one-out double to left, before Blaize Johnson would draw a two-out walk to extend the inning. Ben Green would single home the game's first run on a ball to center that brought Gillen home, moving up to second on the throw. Owen Michelson would reach on a single before advancing on an error in the Mississippi Valley State infield as Green and Johnson would score on the play. Chase Klingemann would score Michelson with his first career triple the next at-bat, capping off a big first inning for Asheville. After Mississippi Valley State scored once in the home half and the teams traded scoreless frames in the second, Asheville would score another four in the top half of the third to stretch the lead to 8-1. Jake Minarik started off the third with an infield single, before Johnson drew a walk to put runners at first and second with no one out. Green would single before advancing on the throw, pushing Johnson to third and allowing Minarik to score. Michelson was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out, before Klingemann drew a walk to score Johnson. Everyone would move up 90 feet on a wild pitch with Green scoring on the play, before Logan Lowe would single home Michelson to cap off the inning. The teams would trade scoreless frames until the sixth, when Lowe would score on a Gillen RBI single through the right side. Asheville would go on to plate four more runs in the seventh to bring the game to its final score. Green began the frame with a one-out infield single, before Michelson drew a walk to put runners and first and second. Klingemann was hit by a pitch to load the bases with just one out, before everyone moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch with Green scoring on the play. Coleman McGinnis would draw a walk to load the bases yet again, before Jack Torbett would rip a single to center to score Klingemann and Michelson. Lowe would draw a walk to fill the bags up again, before McGinnis would score on a Gillen sacrifice fly to bring the game to its final score.

Green and Michelson each scored a career-high three runs in the game, while Johnson scored twice and Lowe, Gillen, Minarik, Klingemann and McGinnis each scored once. Gillen, Green, Klingemann and Torbett each drove in two runs in the game, while Lowe and Michelson each drove in one run. Lucas Boesen (1-0) earned his first win as a Bulldog on the mound, firing a seven-inning complete game allowing just one run on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts. This marks the first complete game for a Bulldog since Jacob Edwards back on Apr. 23, 2021 against Charleston Southern when he fired all seven innings in a 17-2 win over Charleston Southern.
