Three Double-Double Efforts Hold Off Winthrop Rally to End Regular Season with 64-59 Win

02.25.2026 | Women's Basketball

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Double-double efforts from Deborah Orianegbena, Journee McDaniel and Nia Green helped UNC Asheville Women's Basketball hold off a Winthrop fourth quarter rally in a 64-59 win to end the 2025-26 regular season. This marks Asheville's first win in Rock Hill since a 65-59 victory back on Feb. 8, 2023. This also marks the first time since an 87-54 win over Presbyterian back on Dec. 8, 2007 that three Bulldogs have recorded a double-double in the same game. In that game back in 2007, the double-double efforts came from Kyla Jones (10 points, 10 rebounds), Lindsey Montgomery (16 points, 15 rebounds) and Ana Baker (11 points, 11 assists).

Winthrop jumped out to an 8-2 lead through just over a minute of play, before Asheville scored seven straight points over the next six minutes to take a lead with under three minutes to play in the quarter. Asheville then continued their run to the end of the frame, scoring eight of the last 14 points in the period to take a 17-14 lead to the second.

Asheville scored only 12 points in the second quarter, holding Winthrop to just nine points to take a 29-23 lead to the half. Asheville used an 11-4 run through the first seven minutes of the period to stretch its lead to double-digits, before Winthrop scored five unanswered points in the final three minutes to send the game to the half.

The Bulldogs more than doubled up the Eagles 24-11 in the third quarter, to eventually take a 53-34 lead to the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs stretched their lead into double digits early in the third quarter with a jumper from Jamaria Freeman and a triple from D'yanna Maxey, holding their double-digit lead through the entire quarter leading by as many as 19 in the period. Asheville opened the quarter on an 11-2 run, as the score fluctuated in double digits toward the end of the frame.

Winthrop responded by outscoring Asheville 25-11 in the fourth quarter, cutting Asheville's lead to just two late in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs were able to hang on to secure the win on the road.

Asheville shot 42.1 percent (24-57) from the field, just 23.1 percent (3-13) from long range and 81.3 percent (13-16) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Winthrop 38-34 in the paint and 16-10 on second chances while also scoring nine points off turnovers, four points on fast breaks and seven points off the bench. The Bulldogs were led by a career-high 18 points from Orianegbena to go along with 12 rebounds, for her first double-double of the season. McDaniel registered her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 boards, while Green posted her ninth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Freeman also scored 10 points in the game, while Kristen McMillan had four and Maxey and Aileen Marquez each had three points. Freeman and Marquez each grabbed three rebounds in the game, while Maxey and McMillan each pulled down two boards. Maxey paced the Bulldogs with three assists in the game, while McDaniel and Green each had two helpers and Orianegbena and Freeman each had one assist in the game. McDaniel paced the Bulldogs with three steals in the game, while Orianegbena, Green, Maxey and McMillan each had one steal in the game. Orianegbena, McDaniel, Green and McMillan each had one block in the game for Asheville.

The Bulldogs now await their seeding and opponent for the 2026 Big South Conference Championships sponsored by the United States Air Force Reserves Mar. 4-8 in Johson City, Tenn.
