Baseball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep Against Rider on Saturday

02.21.2026 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball suffered a doubleheader sweep against Rider at Greenwood Field on Saturday (Feb. 21), dropping game one 10-8 and game two 10-2.

Game One

Rider struck first in the top half of the second with three runs on the board, before the Bulldogs responded with five runs in the home half of the third to take a 5-3 lead. Coleman McGinnis began the inning with a single up the middle, before Zeb Swangim dropped down a bunt single for his first career hit to put two runners on for the top of the order. After a successful sacrifice bunt from Logan Lowe, Patrick Gillen drove in both runners with a single to right center to get the Bulldogs on the board. Jake Minarik would continue the inning with a walk, before Blaize Johnson tied the game with a single through the right side to score Gillen. With two outs in the inning, Ben Green would keep the rally alive with a single up the middle to move Johnson to third. After Green swiped second to move into scoring position, Owen Michelson singled up the middle to score two more runs and cap off the big inning for the Bulldogs. After a scoreless fourth and Rider responding with two runs in the top of the fifth, Asheville was able to get one back in the home half on Green's first collegiate home run which sailed over the center field wall. Rider would score two in the sixth and three in the seventh, before Asheville would get one back in the seventh when Tyler Parks drew a bases-loaded walk to score Green. Asheville would score one more run in the ninth inning when Owen Michelson came home on a wild pitch, but that would be it for the Dogs in game one.

Green led the way offensively going a career-best 4-5, while McGinnis had two hits and Gillen, Johnson, Michelson, Klingemann and Swangim each had one hit in the game. Green also scored a career-high three runs in the game, while Gillen, Johnson, Michelson, McGinnis and Swangim each scored once. Gillen and Michelson each drove in two runs, while Johnson, Green and Parks each drove in one run. Gillen and Green also each stole one base in the game. Cooper Smith gave the Bulldogs a solid start on the mound, allowing four runs on six hits through four innings with one walk and three strikeouts before passing the ball off to Daylinh Nguyen-Brown. Nguyen-Brown (1-1) took the loss in the contest allowing three runs, two earned on four hits through 1.2 innings while striking out one, before giving way to Garrett Crum. Crum worked a solid 3.1 innings of relief on the day, allowing three runs on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Game Two

Rider would score first again in game two with two runs in the top of the third after two scoreless innings. Asheville would cut the deficit in half thanks to some crafty baserunning in the bottom of the fourth, with Green staying in a rundown between first and second long enough to allow Johnson to score. Rider responded with two runs in the fifth, two in the seventh and four in the eighth before Asheville would score the final run of the game in the home half of the eighth when Green doubled home Gillen to ultimately bring the game to its final score.

Gillen and Johnson each had two hits in the game, while Green, Jake Minarik and Parks each had one hit in the contest. Gillen and Johnson each scored in the game, while Johnson also drove in one run in the game. Gillen also stole another base in the game. Green (0-2) took the loss on the bump, allowing two runs on three hits through three innings to go along with three punchouts. He then passed the ball to Matthew Hall, who allowed three runs on two hits through 1.2 innings with one walk before handing things off to Landon Gross. Gross worked one third of an inning with one walk and a strikeout before passing the ball to Ryland Howell. Howell allowed two runs on one hit through 1.1 innings with one strikeout, before giving the ball to Branden Barna. Barna worked 0.2 innings allowing one hit with one walk and two strikeouts, before handing the ball off to Nic Melton. After Melton passed the ball to Nick Bruno, Bruno finished the last two innings allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout.

The Bulldogs return to action next Friday (Feb. 27) facing Mississippi Valley State in non-conference action. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. EST from Jackson State University in Jackson, Miss.
