Fast Start, Pair of Double-Doubles Not Enough in Loss to High Point
02.18.2026 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - A fast start coupled with a pair of double-double efforts were not enough for UNC Asheville Women's Basketball in a 60-55 loss to High Point on Wednesday (Feb. 18). A 20-point, 13-rebound double-double along with a 16-point, 10-rebound effort from Nia Green marked the first time since a 70-64 win over Wofford back on Nov. 23, 2021 that two Bulldogs had recorded double-doubles in the same game. On that day, the Bulldogs got 20 points and 10 rebounds from Nadiria Evans and 14 points and 13 rebounds from Amanda Blake.
Â
The Bulldogs jumped out to a hot start and a 15-4 lead to force an early High Point timeout through the first four and a half minutes, with two buckets from Nia Green followed by a score from Journee McDaniel. After four points from High Point, McDaniel would knock down back-to-back three-pointers before Jamaria Freeman would score an old-fashioned three-point play to stretch the lead. High Point responded scoring six of the final 11 points in the quarter as the Bulldogs led 19-10 headed to the second.
Â
High Point would score 15 points in the second quarter holding Asheville to just five points as High Point responded to take a 25-24 lead to the half.
Â
The teams clamped down defensively in the third quarter, with High Point scoring 11 points to UNC Asheville's 10 as High Point took a 36-34 lead to the fourth.
Â
The teams turned up the dial on offense in the fourth quarter, with High Point ultimately winning the frame 24-21 to bring the game to its final score. High Point quickly stretched its lead to seven early in the fourth to force an Asheville timeout, before later stretching the lead to 11. The Bulldogs were able to cut the deficit to just three off a score from McDaniel and back-to-back Jamaria Freeman three-pointers, before High Point would push the lead back to seven with under three minutes to play. A jumper from McDaniel and an old-fashioned three-point play from Green got the deficit back to two with under two to play, before Freeman would eventually bring Kimmel Arena to its feet with a game-tying triple with just 1:08 to play. High Point responded from that point to rally to secure the victory on the road.
Â
The Bulldogs shot 30.3 percent (20-66) from the floor, just 26.1 percent (6-23) from beyond the arc and 69.2 percent (9-13) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored High Point 16-3 on second chances in the game, while also scoring eight points off turnovers, 22 points in the paint, 11 points on fast breaks and four points off the bench. In addition to the efforts from Green and McDaniel, Freeman added 15 points with a career-high 22 field goals attempts in the game along with two points each from Kristen McMillan and Aileen Marquez. Asheville out-rebounded High Point 46-31 in the game led by McDaniel and Green, while McMillan pulled down a career-high eight and Deborah Orianegbena also had five. Freeman pulled down four boards in the game, while Maxey had two and Marquez also had one. Freeman paced the Bulldogs with five assists in the game, while McDaniel and Maxey each had four and Green also had two. McDaniel matched her career-high with four steals in the game, while Maxey had two and McMillan also had one. Green posted the lone rejection in the game for Asheville.
Â
The Bulldogs return to Kimmel Arena for Senior Day hosting Presbyterian on Saturday (Feb. 21). Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. with video, live stats, radio and tickets available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
