09.06.2025 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer powered past Bellarmine by a score of 3-1 on Saturday (Sept. 6) at Greenwood Field. This is the second consecutive year that the Bulldogs have played to a 3-0-0 start at home to start the season.
Â
Bellarmine struck first in the seventh minute when Johan Nissen-Lie was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. He buried the attempt to give the visiting Knights an early 1-0 lead in the match. The teams spent the remainder of the first half trading runs and chances in their offensive halves, before Asheville made one final push in the final three minutes of the opening period. A ball was played in to the Bellarmine end that Jack Steel got a touch on, before fidning Rodrigo Mendes. Mendes pushed it on to a hard-charging Dylan Culbertson, who buried his first career goal to send the match to the half tied 1-1.
Â
The teams spent the first 20 minutes of the second half still trading runs and creating chances, before Asheville would make a push paced by Brede Fiksdal. Fiksdal would feed a ball to fellow freshman Arnor Hardarson in the 67th minute, who scored his first career goal to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs would play back to defend their own end, when a late Bellarmine free kick was awarded outside of the penalty area. The ball was blocked down and the Bulldogs were off to the races, as Dylan Kwasnik fed a ball forward to a streaking Hardarson down the middle of the pitch. Hardarson chipped it over a hard-charging Bellarmine keeper for his second of the match to secure the home win for the Bulldogs.
Â
Asheville had six shots in the match to Bellarmine's nine, with each team posting four shots on frame in the contest. Corner kicks were at a premium in the contest with Bellarmine earning two to Asheville's one. Hardarson paced the Bulldogs with two shots in the match, while Charlie Wood, Joe Ling, Rodrigo Mendes and Culbertson each had one shot in the match. Lucca Barros (3-1-0) made three saves between the pipes in the win.
