05.07.2025 | Men's Basketball

CLEVELAND, Ohio— For the third year in a row, Fletcher Abee of the UNC Asheville men's basketball team has been named to the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (ADA) Scholar Athlete Team. The association made the announcement on Wednesday (May 7).

"We are thrilled to see Fletcher honored again for his on and off the court accomplishments," said UNC Asheville Head Men's Basketball Coach Mike Morrell. "He has been a staple in our program the last three years and as consistent of a player as we have had during my time here in Asheville. We look forward to seeing him continue to grow as he departs UNC Asheville."

Basketball players from all Division I-AAA ADA member institutions are eligible for these prestigious annual awards. Each nominee is required to maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletics credentials. Nominees must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games listed on the nomination form. To be eligible for nomination to the Scholar-Athlete Team, individuals must have reached junior academic standing at their respective institution (ineligible athletics transfers are not eligible).

"It gives us immense pride to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our men's and women's scholar-athlete teams this year," stated Division I-AAA ADA President and Director of Athletics at Loyola University Chicago, Steve Watson. "These students exemplify the perfect balance between academic and athletic commitment. The dedication of these students enhances the core values that we aim to foster in college athletics. In addition, the postgraduate scholarships we provide are another opportunity for us to home in on their extraordinary accomplishment."

Abee, who holds a 3.83 grade-point average with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies, is the only individual in the Big South to receive this honor three times in his career. He was named the Big South Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year this past season, is a three-time Big South All-Academic Team Member, is a three-time College Sports Communicators All-District member, and is a two-time NABC Honors Court recipient.

In his final season as a Bulldog, Abee started and played in 30 of Asheville's 32 games. He scored 304 points, grabbed 54 rebounds, handed out 36 assists, and finished the season as the Big South leader and No. 11 in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage at 43.4% and 11th nationally. Abee had a season-high 27 points at Central Arkansas on Nov. 24, where he went 9-19 from 3-point range to match his career-high of nine 3-pointers, which is No. 2 in the program record book for most triples in a game. On Dec. 21, at UNC Wilmington, Abee recorded his 300th career 3-pointer and finished his playing career with 341. Abee finished his Bulldog career with 202 3-pointers, putting him at No. 6 in program records for most career triples.
