FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. – It took six extra holes past regulation end to determine if the UNC Asheville Bulldogs or the Charleston Southern Buccaneers would be advancing to the championship round of Big South Conference match play on Wednesday, April 16.

Charleston Southern was the first team to get a point in match play, with CSU's Katie Stephens defeating Ally Kerr 7&6 (led by seven with six holes to go). The Buccaneers worked themselves to a 2-0 lead following a tight matchup between Eugenie Varet and Claudia Salvador, with Varet winning 2&1.

Asheville evened the score, with Morgan Guepet coming from behind to take her match 4&3. Guepet trailed 2-0, but won five of the last six holes to earn Asheville's first match victory. Caroline Patterson went on to win her match 3&2. Patterson went up 1-0 after the first hole and remained ahead for the entire match.

In the deciding match, Beryl Giletti was 2-up before Charleston Southern's Isabella Galla birdied the last two holes to even the score at the end of 18 holes. The two went on to play six tiebreaker holes, with Galla earning the match victory for the Buccaneers after sinking a chip shot for par on hole six.

"Today was a tough ending to an otherwise very successful season," said Head Coach Ross Cash. "I felt certain that we were going to run the table and win both matches today. Golf is a tough back-and-forth game, especially with match play. We had a lot of first-time accomplishments and dealt with and overcame a lot this year. My team has shown a lot of grit and heart. I'm proud of the team for what they have done and the work that they put in, but especially for what type of people they are. I love my team and all of our supporters. The seniors will be dearly missed, and each holds a special place in my heart, but it is comforting to know that each has a bright future ahead. Golfers leave UNC Asheville forever changed because of their experience here, and they, in turn, will change and brighten the lives of so many others."
