Five Long Balls Not Enough in Walk-Off Loss to Western Carolina on Tuesday

03.25.2025 | Baseball

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Five long balls was not enough for UNC Asheville Baseball in a 9-8 walk-off loss at Western Carolina on Tuesday (Mar. 25). The five long balls are the second-most by a Big South Conference team in a single game this season, marking the fourth time this season a Big South Conference team has gone deep five times in a single game. It's also the most for the Bulldogs since Apr. 6, 1998 when they clubbed six homers in a 20-19 loss at East Tennessee State in which Bulldog Hall of Famer Ty Wigginton set the program single-game record for home runs with three.

Asheville jumped on Western Carolina's starter with back-to-back home runs from Corbin Lanowitz and Logan Lowe, the first of the season for Lanowitz and the first of Lowe's Bulldog career. Western Carolina would tie the game in the home half of the second, before Asheville would respond with four runs in the top of the fourth. Blaize Johnson led off the inning with a double to left center, before Canon Pierce launched his first career home run over the right field fence to give Asheville a 4-2 lead. Asheville would go back-to-back for the second time in the game when Jake Minarik would blast his first career home run to left to stretch Asheville's lead to 5-2. Lanowitz would continue the inning with a single to right field, before moving all the way to third on an error in right field. He would score on a single to center by Lowe as Asheville extended its lead to 6-2. Asheville would tack on two more in the fifth inning when Minarik went deep for a second time with Johnson on base as Asheville pushed its lead to 8-2. Western Carolina got one run back in the home half of the sixth before scoring one in the seventh, three in the eighth and two in the ninth to rally for the walk-off win.

Minarik paced the offense going a career-best 4-4 in the game with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored while Lowe went 3-5 driving in two and scoring once. Lanowitz and Rylen Stockton each registered two hits in the game, while Johnson and Pierce each had one hit. Johnson and Lanowitz each also crossed the plate twice, while Pierce also scored once. Pierce also drove in two runs, while Lanowitz also had one RBI. Shea Walker got the start on the mound, allowing two runs on two hits through two innings with one strikeout before giving way to two hitless innings from Branden Barna. Barna allowed just one walk and two strikeouts in his outing before handing the ball to Daylinh Nguyen-Brown, who allowed one run on two hits through two innings with one walk. Matthew Hall, Cal Barna and Sam Thompson handled the next four outs, before Tony Lopez (0-1) would ultimately take the loss in the ninth.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Friday (Mar. 28) hosting Presbyterian in Big South Conference action for a three-game series. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
