Baseball Falters in Series Opener Against Longwood

Longwood built a 6-0 lead through the first inning and a half, before Asheville would get on the board with one run in the second and one in the third. Charlie Stogner reached on a fielder's choice to score Patrick Gillen in the second, before Brock Mercado would bring home Corbin Lanowitz in the third on a groundout. Longwood would extend its lead with two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth, before Asheville would respond with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mercado began the inning with a one-out single to center, before moving to second on a single to right by Gillen. After the second out was recorded, both runners would move up on a wild pitch before coming home on a double to left center by Blaize Johnson. Stogner would single up the middle to move Johnson to third, before Jake Pereira would be hit by a pitch to load the bases for the top of the lineup. Lanowitz drew a walk to score Johnson, before Logan Lowe would welcome a new Longwood pitcher to the game with a two-run single to left center scoring Stogner and Pereira. Longwood would go on to stretch its lead with two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth. Asheville would get one across in the ninth to bring the game to its final score, with Rylen Stockton bringing Lanowitz home on a single through the left side.

Stockton and Gillen paced the offense with three hits each, while Lanowitz had two hits and Lowe, Mercado, Chase Klingemann, Johnson and Stogner each had one hit in the game. Lanowitz and Gillen each scored twice in the game, while Mercado, Johnson, Stogner and Pereira each scored once. Lowe and Johnson each drove in two runs in the game, while Lanowitz, Stockton, Mercado and Stogner each drove in one run. Nic Melton (0-2) took the loss on the bump, allowing four runs in 1.1 innings with four walks. He was relieved by 2.1 innings from Matthew Hall, who gave up four runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Tony Lopez, Sam Thompson and Nick Bruno each fired 0.2 innings in the game, while Ryland Howell handled the next 2.1 innings of relief. Howell allowed three runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts, while Chase Buscher took the ninth inning. Buscher allowed one run with three walks and three strikeouts in his outing.
