Bulldogs Take Series over Gardner-Webb with Saturday Doubleheader Split

Game One

Gardner-Webb built an 8-0 lead through the first two innings, before Asheville got on the board with three runs in the top of the third. Jake Minarik began the inning drawing a walk before Charlie Stogner was hit by a pitch, before both runners moved up a base on a balk. Jake Pereira would score Minarik on an infield single, before Corbin Lanowitz was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Logan Lowe was hit by a pitch to score Stogner, before a Rylen Stockton groundout scored Pereira. The teams traded scoreless frames until the fifth, when Asheville added one run on a Blaize Johnson sacrifice fly that scored Lanowitz. Both teams would score runs in the sixth, with Asheville plating two and Gardner-Webb adding three. The inning began for Asheville with a Patrick Gillen single through the right side, before being moved to third on a double to left by Minarik. Gillen would score on a Stogner groundout, before Pereira would single home Minarik in the inning for Asheville. Gardner-Webb would add two runs in the bottom of the eighth to bring the game to its final score.

Pereira paced the offense with two hits while Lanowitz, Lowe, Gillen and Minarik each had one hit in the game. Minarik scored twice in the game, while Lanowitz, Gillen, Stogner and Pereira each scored one run. Pereira drove in two runs, while Lowe, Stockton, Johnson and Stogner each drove in one run in the game. Colby Guy (2-3) took the loss on the bump, while Tony Lopez allowed one run scattering five hits over four innings of relief while walking two and striking out four. Ryland Howell, Cal Barna and Sam Thompson finished off the game for Asheville on the mound.

After the teams traded empty frames through three innings, Asheville would score three in the fourth and two in the fifth to build Clay Edmondson a 5-0 lead. Stockton would lace a one-out single to center before swiping second, scoring on a single to left by Brock Mercado. Mercado moved to third on a single up the middle by Gillen, before scoring on a groundout by Minarik. Gillen would take third on a wild pitch, before scoring on a single to right by Blaize Johnson. After Edmondson tossed another clean frame in the bottom of the fourth, Lowe would get things going in the top of the fifth with a one-out walk before stealing second. He would score on a single up the middle by Stockton, before Stockton would advance to second on a failed pickoff attempt. A single to right by Mercado moved Stockton to third, before he would score on a wild pitch. Gardner-Webb would get on the board with one in the bottom of the seventh, before Asheville would score its final run in the top of the eighth when Johnson singled home Mercado. Gardner-Webb would score two in the eighth and one in the ninth to bring the game to its final score, before Daylinh Nguyen-Brown locked down his second save in as many days and his fourth of the season.

Mercado paced the offense in the second game going 3-4 with one double, while Johnson also posted a career-best 3-4 day at the plate. Stockton also had two hits in the game, along with one from Gillen. Stockton and Mercado each scored twice, while Lowe and Gillen each crossed the plate once. Johnson drove in two runs in the game, while Stockton, Mercado and Minarik each drove in one. Edmondson (3-1) continued his hot start on the mound, firing 6.2 innings giving up just one run on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. He was relieved by 1.1 innings from Nick Bruno who allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Nic Melton would take the mound to start the ninth, before Nguyen-Brown would come on to register the save allowing one hit and one strikeout.
