Women's Basketball Falls to Winthrop on Senior Day

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball fell to Winthrop on Senior Day on Saturday (Mar. 1) by a score of 71-66 inside Kimmel Arena.
Asheville led 11-9 after a slow-moving first quarter, before jumping out to a 16-9 lead early in the second quarter with a jumper from LaImani Simmons and a three-pointer from Dakota McCaughan. Winthrop would close the gap to four as Asheville led 22-18 at the half.
Winthrop would take command in the third quarter winning the frame 22-12, before the teams would play an all-out offensive fourth quarter with Asheville scoring 31 points to Winthrop's 32.
Asheville shot 37.3 percent (25-67) from the field, 22.7 percent (5-22) from long range and 64.7 percent (11-17) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Winthrop 20-16 off turnovers and 30-10 off the bench in the game, while also scoring 28 points in the paint, six points on second chances and 21 points on fast breaks in the game. Four Bulldogs scored in double figures in the game, paced by 18 points from McCaughan and 17 from Simmons while Abigail Wilson added 12 and Alana Swift had 10. Taylor Wilkins chipped in four points, while Sydney Burris had three and Deborah Orianegbena had two. Asheville out-rebounded Winthrop 42-39 paced by a game-high 14 from Orianegbena, just one off her career-high. Wilson pulled down eight rebounds, while Swift had five and Simmons had four. McCaughan grabbed three rebounds in the game, while Burris and Trinity Barnes each had two and Skylar Bailey also had one. McCaughan dished out a game-high four assists in the game, while Wilson and Simmons each had two and Wilkins, Orianegbena, Bailey, Swift, Burris and Barnes each had one in the game. McCaughan also registered a game-high five steals, while Simmons had two while Wilson and Swift each had one.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 5) in the Big South Conference Tournament against an opponent to be determined. Tip-off will be at 5:00 p.m. from Freedom Hall in Johnson City, Tenn.
