Bulldogs Fall in Hard-Fought Overtime Battle at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The top two teams in the Big South Conference squared off in the Quebein Center on Saturday evening, and after 45 minutes of hard-fought action, the UNC Asheville men's basketball team fell 104-100 to the High Point Panthers.
OVERTIME HISTORY
Saturday's overtime contest marks Asheville's second overtime game of the season and their first overtime game during Big South regular season play since Jan. 25, 2023.
TRIPLE DIGITS
The Bulldogs' 100 points mark the fourth game this season that Asheville has reached the century mark, which is the most 100-point games in a season since the 1972-73 season when the Bulldogs scored in triple figures five times. Asheville broke the century mark in the Bulldogs' 103-99 victory over High Point on Jan. 4, and tonight's 100 points marks the first time since the 2013-14 season that Asheville has hit the century mark against a Division I opponent twice in a season.
NEW CAREER HIGHS FOR MARSH
Jordan Marsh set six new career-highs on Saturday and reached his career-high in rebounds for the fourth time, as Marsh finished with 33 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 37 minutes of action. Marsh went 13-27 from the field and 6-12 from 3-point range. Marsh's rebounds were a team-high, and his 33 points were a game-high.
DOUBLE-DIGIT DOGS
Three other Bulldogs joined Marsh in double figures, marking the 17th time this season that four or more Bulldogs have scored in double-figures. Josh Banks followed with 20 points, going 6-14 from the field, 4-10 from 3-point range, and 4-4 from the charity stripe. Toyaz Solomon had 17 points, his 23rd game in double figures, and had seven boards and four blocks. Fletcher Abee was the final Bulldog to reach double-figures, scoring 10 points and going 2-5 from 3-point range.
Kameron Taylor finished with nine points and six rebounds, and Greg Gantt Jr. finished with eight points, five rebounds, and a game-high four assists.
SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPARISON
Both teams took 72 shots from the field, with Asheville making 33 baskets and High Point making 37. The Bulldogs went 12-27 from 3-point range, while High Point went 3-13. High Point went 27-33 from the charity stripe, while Asheville went 22-29.
The Panthers outscored Asheville 62-32 in the paint, where Asheville outscored High Point 36-9 from 3-point range. Asheville outscored High Point off turnovers 22-15 and 21-16 off second-chance points.
ON THE COURT
High Point held the lead for 38:19 of action and earned its largest lead of the night at 12 points with 5:29 to go in the second half. Asheville had the lead for 2:13. There were nine ties throughout the contest.
High Point took the lead out of the gate and led for 14:11 until a jumper from Banks tied the score at 29. With 4:28 to go in the first frame, Marsh helped Asheville to its first lead of the night with a step-back jumper (34-33). Neither team led by more than two points for the remainder of the opening frame, with High Point taking a one-point lead into halftime (44-43).
High Point extended its lead out to five to open the second half before a jumper from Solomon sparked a 7-0 run to put the Bulldogs ahead 55-52. Solomon brought High Point's lead down to two before a successful trip to the free throw line, and a 3-pointer from Banks helped Asheville take the lead.
An alley-oop from High Point's Juslin Bodo Bodo with 13:22 to go in the second half put High Point in the lead, and the Bulldogs were unable to move back out in front for the remainder of the game. The Panthers extended their lead out to double-figures with 5:29 left in the second half before a 10-2 run by Asheville closed the second half out and tied the score at 86 to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, High Point moved back into the lead and remained ahead for the rest of the game. Marsh brought the Panthers' lead down to one point with nine seconds remaining, but High Point closed the game with four made free throws to secure the victory.

Asheville moves to 17-7 and 8-2 in league play, while High Point improves to 21-5 and 9-2.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 12), as Asheville travels to USC Upstate for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
