Bulldogs Start Series with Dramatic 6-5 Win over Stonehill

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball started its weekend series with a dramatic 6-5 win over Stonehill at Greenwood Field on Friday (Feb. 28).

After two solid frames from starter Branden Barna, Asheville would jump on Stonehill starter Ryan Douglas for three runs in the bottom half of the second. After two quick outs in the home half of the inning, Brock Mercado jump-started the offense with a bunt single to third base before Caiden Chilausky followed suit with a bunt single to the pitcher to put runners at first and second. Jake Pereira would drop a double into center field to score both runners, before coming home on a RBI single to right center by Logan Lowe. After a scoreless third, Stonehill would respond with two runs in the top half of the fourth before Asheville would get one back in the home half of the fifth when Rylen Stockton singled home Owen Michelson. Stonehill would tie the game again in the top half of the sixth with two runs, before Asheville would take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh when Ben Hemphill scored Corbin Lanowitz on a sacrifice fly. Stonehill would tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the eighth, before Asheville would take the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth. Pereira laced a single through the left side with two outs in the inning to give Asheville a baserunner, before Lowe singled up the middle. Pereira cruised around second headed for third, as Lowe took a big turn around first and proceeded to second. Periera got the windmill from head coach Scott Friedholm around third, scoring on a wild throw to the plate as Lowe moved up to third and the Bulldogs re-gained the lead in the game. Daylinh Nguyen-Brown would come on in the ninth to lock up his second save of the season as the Bulldogs got back in the win column.

Lowe, Mercado and Pereira each had two hits in the game, while Lanowitz, Michelson, Stockton and Chilausky each had one hit in the game. Pereira scored twice and also drove in two runs in the game, while Lanowitz, Michelson, Mercado and Chilausky each scored one run in the game. Lowe, Stockton and Hemphill each drove in one run in the game for the Bulldogs. Barna fired a season-high 5.2 innings in a no-decision effort, allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and a career-high five strikeouts. He was relieved by Nic Melton for 0.1 innings who allowed one run on one hit with two walks, before Melton gave way to eventual winning pitcher Matthew Hall (1-0). Hall fired two innings allowing one run on one hit with two punchouts, before Nguyen-Brown came on for the save. Nguyen-Brown worked the ninth with one walk and one strikeout to close down the win for the Bulldogs.
