Women's Soccer Falls at The Citadel in Season Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer fell in its 2024 season opener at The Citadel by a score of 2-1 on Thursday (Aug. 15).

Asheville struck first in the 30th minute when Julia Hüsch fed a ball down the wing to the feet of Azalea Mihailovich. Mihailovich blasted the ball to the top left corner for her first of the season and the fifth of her career to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0. Asheville had held The Citadel off the shot chart into the final five minutes of the half, before a misplay near the Asheville goal freed up an open net for The Citadel to tie the match. The teams went to the break tied 1-1.

The Citadel would break the tie in the 62nd minute for a 2-1 lead. Asheville held a 5-3 edge in shots in the second half including two on goal for each team, but The Citadel was able to stand tall defensively to prevent the equalizer.

Asheville posted a 13-5 advantage in shots for the match including the 5-3 edge in shots on frame. Mihailovich tied a career-high with a team-best three shots in the contest, while Ava Bjorkman-Tracy and Akari Kishida each logged two shots. Manuela Schreier and Mercedes McNabb each posted their first career shots, while Addie Cooper, Taylor Gardner, Daysha Chaney and Nao Kawasaki each also posted one shot in the match. Gracie Murray (0-1-0) made one save between the pipes for Asheville, the 75th of her career.

The Bulldogs (0-1-0) return to the pitch on Sunday (Aug. 18) to face mountain rival Western Carolina on the road. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. from Cullowhee, N.C., with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
