Baseball Drops Series Finale to Gardner-Webb on Sunday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball dropped its series finale to Gardner-Webb on Sunday (May 12) by a score of 5-2.
The Bulldogs were held hitless for 5.1 innings as Gardner-Webb built a 5-0 lead. After a Dylan Bacot double broke up the hitless effort with a double in the sixth, the Bulldogs would plate two runs in the seventh to bring the game to its final score. Brock Mercado began the effort with a one-out double to left, before he later scored on a Kolby Watson single coupled with a Gardner-Webb error that allowed Watson to move to second on the play. Watson later scored on a single to right from Kaufman as Asheville's second run.
Robbie Burnett finished the day with two hits, while Kaufman, Bacot, Cameron Johnson, Mercado and Watson each had one. Kaufman and Watson drove in runs, while Mercado and Watson each scored once. Cole Schiff (3-2) took the loss on the hill allowing five runs, four earned on seven hits through five innings with two walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts. He was followed by three innings of scoreless relief from Justin Needles who scattered three hits while walking four and striking out four. Bryce Fisher took the ninth inning, allowing one hit in the frame.
