Bulldogs Rally, Walk Off Gardner-Webb in Wild Friday Night Affair

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville Baseball team rallied to walk off Gardner-Webb 10-9 in a wild Friday night (May 10) affair at Greenwood Field.
Asheville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning started by a leadoff walk drawn by Ty Kaufman, before Corbin Lanowitz singled and both runners moved up one base on a Gardner-Webb error on the play. After Robbie Burnett drew a walk, Cameron Johnson lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Kaufman and give the Bulldogs the lead with Lanowitz moving up to third. Lanowitz would later score on a single by Michael Groves. Gardner-Webb responded with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead, before each team scored once in the third to move the score to 4-3. The third inning began with back-to-back one-out singles from Burnett and Johnson, before Groves was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dylan Bacot singled to left to score Burnett to get the Bulldogs back within one. After a scoreless fourth on both sides, Gardner-Webb would plate two for a 6-3 lead before Asheville would respond with three in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Burnett led off the inning with a walk before the first out was recorded. Groves singled to right before Bacot was hit by a pitch to move into a tie atop the all-time career HBP list, before Ben Hemphill was hit by a pitch to force home a run. Brock Mercado slashed a ball to first base for an infield single to bring home another run, before Kaufman reached on a two-out fielding error by Gardner-Webb to bring home a third run. Gardner-Webb regained the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth, before Asheville would get back within one with two in the home half. After a Burnett leadoff walk, Johnson singled to left, before both runners would move up a base on a bobble in left and another base on a wild throw in leaving Johnson and third with Burnett scoring on the play. Johnson would later come home on a RBI single by Groves to get the Bulldogs back within 9-8. After a scoreless seventh, Burnett tied the game with a solo jolt to right center, his 17th of the season to send the game to the ninth tied 9-9. Jacob Williams (1-1) worked a three-up three-down ninth punctuated by a strikeout, before the Bulldogs came to bat in the ninth with a chance to win it. Mercado led off the inning dropping a bloop single into right center before back-to-back outs were recorded. Lanowitz slashed a double down the left field line pushing pinch-runner Caiden Chilausky to third, before Burnett was intentionally walked to load the bases for Johnson. Johnson watched four straight balls to draw the walk and score the winning run.
Johnson and Groves each paced the offense with three hits in the game, while Lanowitz, Burnett, Bacot and Mercado each had two hits. Kohl Abrams also had one hit in the game. Burnett scored four times in the game, while Kaufman, Lanowitz, Johnson, Groves, Bacot and Chilausky each scored once. Johnson and Groves each drove in two runs in the game, while Burnett, Bacot, Hemphill and Mercado each drove in one run. Nick Bruno got the start for the Bulldogs, going 1.1 innings before giving way to 3.2 innings of relief from Brett Johnson. Johnson allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in his appearance. Johnson turned things over to Jacob Strmiska, who gave way to Nic Melton after tossing 0.2 innings. Melton fired a key 2.1 innings of hitless relief with one walk and two strikeouts. Williams would get the win for the Bulldogs, firing one inning with one strikeout before the Bulldogs walked it off.
