Bulldogs Secure Series Win over Gardner-Webb on Senior Day

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball secured a Big South Conference series win over Gardner-Webb on Senior Day on Saturday (May 11) at Greenwood Field by a score of 12-4.
Garnder-Webb struck for two runs in the first inning, before Asheville combined for seven runs through the first two innings. Robbie Burnett brought home Ty Kaufman on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, before a Michael Groves double scored Corbin Lanowitz to tie the game 2-2 in the first. With one out in the second, Brock Mercado doubled to left center before later scoring on a Kolby Watson single to right center. Ty Kaufman dropped a single to right, before Burnett drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Cameron Johnson punctuated his Senior Day with a grand slam to left to increase Asheville's lead to 7-2. Asheville extended its lead to 11-2 with four runs in the third, when the inning began with a one-out single from Ben Hemphill. Mercado singled to put two on, before Watson launched his first career home run to right center to increase the Asheville lead. Kaufman would follow the bomb with single before advancing on a balk and later scoring on a single by Burnett. Gardner-Webb scored twice in the fourth, before one Asheville run in the sixth would bring the game to its final score.
Johnson paced the offense going 3-5, while Kaufman, Groves and Watson each had two hits in the game. Lanowitz, Burnett and Hemphill each had one hit in the game, while Kaufman scored three runs and Johnson, Mercado and Watson each scored twice. Lanowitz, Burnett and Hemphill each scored once while Johnson and Watson each led the offense with four RBI. Burnett drove in two runs in the game, while Groves also drove in one in the contest. Colby Guy (7-3) earned the win on the hill, allowing four runs through five innings on five hits. Guy also walked four and struck out eight. Justin Honeycutt earned his second save of the season, firing four scoreless innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Â
