Bulldogs Even Series with Tight Win at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. - UNC Asheville Baseball evened its Big South Conference series with tight 3-2 win at Longwood on Saturday (Apr. 27).
Asheville jumped out to a 2-0 lead with one run apiece in the second and third inning, starting with a double down the left field line from Dylan Bacot before putting runners at the corners with a single through the left side by Michael Groves. A one-out groundout from Brock Mercado brought home Bacot to give the Bulldogs the lead. The third inning began with a single down the right field line, followed by a Robbie Burnett walk to put two runners on with no outs. A Cameron Johnson sacrifice bunt was followed by a groundout by Corbin Lanowitz that scored Kaufman to put Asheville up 2-0. Colby Guy kept the Lancers off the board for the next three innings, before Longwood rallied to tie the game with a run in the sixth and the run in the seventh. Burnett would give the Bulldogs the lead for good in the top of the eighth with a solo shot to right, his 15th of the year to tie him in fifth all-time on the single-season home run list. Justin Honeycutt was able to shut it down in the ninth for the victory.
Kaufman and Groves each paced the offense with two hits in the game, while Burnett, Bacot and Kohl Abrams each had one hit. Kaufman, Burnett and Bacot each scored runs in the game, while Burnett, Lanowitz and Mercado each drove in runs in the game. Honeycutt (2-1) picked up the relief win, allowing one run on two hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Guy put together another solid start for Asheville, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and one strikeout in 5.2 innings of work.
