Baseball Drops Series Finale at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. - UNC Asheville Baseball dropped its Big South Conference series finale at Longwood on Sunday (Apr. 28) by a score of 8-4.

Longwood scored once in the second and twice in the third to jump out to a 3-0 lead, before Asheville scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to tie the game. The fourth inning began with Dylan Bacot smoking a double down the left field line, before advancing to third on a fly ball off the bat of Michael Groves. He would score on a groundout by Canon Pierce to get the Bulldogs on the board. Kohl Abrams led off the fifth inning with a walk, before moving to third on a one-out single by Robbie Burnett. Cameron Johnson scored Abrams with a single to center, before Corbin Lanowitz loaded the bases reaching on a fielder's choice. Bacot lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Burnett for the second run of the inning. Longwood countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, before adding to their lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Asheville brought the game to its final score with one run in the top of the ninth, with Ty Kaufman scoring on Bacot's second sacrifice fly of the game.

Burnett and Johnson each had two hits in the game, while Kaufman, Lanowitz, Bacot, Brock Mercado and Abrams each had one hit. Bacot drove in two runs on the day, while Johnson and Pierce each also brought home one run. Kaufman, Burnett, Bacot and Abrams each scored runs in the game for Asheville. Cole Schiff (3-1) took the loss on the hill, allowing five runs on seven hits through four innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Justin Needles fired 2.2 innings of relief allowing three runs, two earned with three walks and three strikeouts followed by 1.1 hitless innings from Jacob Williams. Williams also collected two strikeouts in his appearance.

The Bulldogs return to action on Friday (May 3) to host Western Kentucky in non-conference action. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
