Women's Basketball Forces Overtime, Falls to High Point in Big South Conference Championship Quarterfinals

HIGH POINT, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball went toe to toe with top seed and host High Point in the Big South Conference Championship quarterfinals by a score of 70-57 in overtime.
High Point jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the early goings, before a late surge from the Bulldogs got Asheville back within striking distance. A bucket from Jamaya Blanks and a pair of free throws from LaImani Simmons got the Bulldogs back within four, before a three-pointer from Mille Brown got Asheville back within one. High Point scored the final bucket of the quarter to take a 16-13 lead to the second.
High Point stretched its lead in the early going of the second quarter, before a triple from Dakota McCaughan and a bucket from Abigail Wilson gave the Bulldogs the lead with five and a half minutes to play. Asheville stretched its lead with back-to-back scoring possessions, first with a layup from Mallory Bruce followed by McCaughan ripping a steal off of Big South Player of the Year Lauren Bevis before feeding Jaila Lee for a breakaway layup. Asheville brought the game to its halftime score with a last-second bucket from first round hero McKinley Brooks-Sumpter as the Bulldogs led 28-23 at the half.
The teams went back and forth through the third quarter, with High Point holding the biggest lead of the frame at 41-35 with just over two minutes to play in the period. The teams went to the fourth with High Point leading 41-37.
Asheville's deficit fluctuated throughout the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, before the Bulldogs battled back to a 46-46 tie with six minutes to play. The teams continued to battle, as High Point took a 55-50 lead into the fi13-16) nal minute. A three-pointer by Bruce followed by two Brooks-Sumpter free throws on the possession following a High Point turnover brought the Bulldogs back and forced overtime with a 55-55 tie.
High Point outscored Asheville 15-2 in the overtime period, knocking down three-pointers on three straight possessions to pull away in the game.
Asheville shot 29.9 percent (20-67) from the field, 26.7 percent (4-15) from three-point range and 81.3 percent (13-16) from the foul line in the game. Asheville also outscored High Point 11-10 on second chances and 16-15 off the bench, while also adding five points off turnovers, 22 points in the paint and six points off fast breaks. Brooks-Sumpter led the scoring effort with 18 points, while Bruce also had 14. Lee added six points, while Blanks and Nycerra Minnis each had four. Millie Brown and McCaughan each had three points, while Wilson had two and Faith Adams had one. Asheville handled High Point 55-40 on the glass in the game, led by a game-high 10 boards from Bruce for her first double-double of the season. Wilson pulled down nine rebounds in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter and Lee each had seven. Adams recorded five rebounds, while Blanks had four and Simmons had three. Minnis pulled down two rebounds in the game, while McCaughan also had one. Adams led the way with four assists, while Wilson dished out three and Brooks-Sumpter also had two. Bruce and Brown each also had one assist in the game. Lee led the way with three steals in the game, tying her career-high for the seventh time. Adams, Minnis and McCaughan each had one steal in the game. Minnis posted Asheville's lone block in the game.
