Bulldogs Fall in Series Finale to Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team played USC Upstate in game three of its Big South Conference series on Saturday and lost 7-6 to the Spartans.
Michael Groves' solo home run in the top of the second helped Asheville take a 1-0 lead. Over the next three innings, Asheville held the one-run lead and extended it to 4-0 in the top of the sixth. Robbie Burnett scored on a sacrifice fly from Corbin Lanowitz, and with Dylan Bacot on base, Cameron Johnson connected for a two-run homer.
In the bottom of the frame, the Spartans scored their first runs and took the lead with three home runs. Upstate's first two long balls were solo shots, while the third homer was a 3-run out-of-the-park shot. Upstate extended its lead to 7-4 in the seventh inning with a 2-run homer.
In the ninth, Asheville looked to battle back as the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out. In what seemed to be the final play of the game, Upstate's third basemen dropped a pop fly, allowing Kohl Abrams and Ty Kaufman to score and make it a one-run game. However, the Bulldogs were unable to perform the comeback, as the Spartans were able to get the final out of the game the next play.
Upstate outhit Asheville 10-6. Johnson had Asheville's only multi-hit game and led the team with two RBIs. Burnett, Groves, Ben Hemphill, and Canon Pierce each had one hit. Colby Guy got the start and suffered the loss, going 5.1 innings, giving up six hits, five runs (all earned), one walk, and one strikeout. Guy had only given up one hit prior to the sixth inning. Justin Honeycutt came in for relief and pitched the final 2.2 innings.
Asheville will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 2, as the Bulldogs host ETSU at Greenwood Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
